Hi new here, just a question on a batch of hp
it was my first batch I cooked it for like 6 hours
it looked like tree sap or pine pitch, never would
show neutral on a pool strip.I finally got mad
at 11:00 pm and put it in molds anyway. That
was 3 weeks ago,my hubby used it on his hands and
said it was fine, but I don't know...Is there any hope of
it neutralizing from sitting like cp or can I rebatch or
should I just throw it out?And what do you guys use to tesr
the ph?Any help appreciated
Dana

Six hours seems excessive to me - between that cook and three weeks cure, it should certainly be safe to use. My HP usually only cooks about 20 minutes (on the low setting in my crock pot). I test by look and feel - it looks like petroleum jelly, and as I stir, it becomes more like mashed potatoes. After stirring, I pull the spatula out and run a gloved finger through the soap on the spatula. I rub it between my fingers to see if it's grainy (not done) or smooth (done). You can also test it with your tongue at this point to see if it zaps (not done) or just tastes like soap with no zap (done).

There are some great HP tutorials, including this one:

There are also threads in this forum that go through the process step-by-step, so you might want to search the forum for more pics and tutorials. Delores Boone's book "Handcrafted Soaps" also has pretty thorough instructions with pictures.

soap will never be neutral - the natural pH of soap is in the range of 9.5-10.5 or even 11. if it was neutral you'd have sludge, not soap.

use a good lye calculator and accurate scales, test with the tip of your tongue when you are fairly confident it's done (put a bit of soap on the tip of a spoon and let it cool; touch your tongue to it), test by washing, stop sweating it.

not sure what happened, but i use the crock pot method for hp, just put you oils in crock on high, then add lye/water mixture, then cook for 30-45 minutes you will see the gel outer ring get bigger and as soon as its gone its done, watch a video on utube then try again!
