Hello all!

I have started to become obsessed with soap making. I had wanted to try making soap for several years now but I've always been to scared.

The silly thing about it is I actually work in a laboratory and run chemistry tests - one of the tests even uses sodium hydroxide! Of course I don't have an eyewash, safety shower, fume hood or chemical spill kit at home!

Well I decided I needed to get over it, I have not had a chemical accident at work (unless you count a small ethanol fire...nobody was hurt, no property was destroyed I swear!). I spent a week reading as much as I could about making soap and ordered everything I thought I would need. Than I spent another week reading more while waiting for everything to arrive.

About a week ago the last shipment arrived I made my first batch of soap! It was so much fun! It is my first attempt at what seems to be the holy grail of soaps - a shampoo bar. It was 50% olive oil, 25% coconut oil and 25% castor oil. It is still pretty soft but I cut off a little piece of one of the bars today and tried washing my hands with it. I was worried that it would feel slimy but it actually feels quite nice. It will be awhile before I try it on my hair - probably another few weeks.

Last weekend I made another batch. This time I did 100% olive oil and instead of using water I used frozen coconut milk. This batch looks awesome! I can't wait to use coconut milk again! It looks like it will be a creamy soap. I hope that it turns out well because I am thinking that I will make this to give out at Christmas. I have been reading that 100% olive oil soap should be cured for 6 moths. Do you think that around 4 months of curing I will be able to tell if it is Christmas gift worthy?

Anyway I apologize for all of my ramblings! I am sure I will have questions in the future and I hope nobody will mind when I ask them.

Welcome to the group. I don't know if anyone has all of this " Of course I don't have an eyewash, safety shower, fume hood or chemical spill kit at home! " At least I know I don't . I have a fume hood - its the exhaust fan over the range, if I mix lye in the kitchen. I have water close at hand to wash any lye off that may get splashed, guess water works for my eye wash and spill kit.

Anyway, you will find that soap making is addictive and lay in bed thinking about what you could add to your next batch. Have fun with your soap making.

Welcome Ianto! Sounds like you got bit by the soap bug. If you wanted to indulge us with some pics of your soap in the Photo Gallery forum, I swear I won't tell the moderators you're contributing to the delinquency of soapaholics.....

Welcome again! :D

Welcome to the soap addiction! I just made my first batches last weekend and already I am dreaming of soap making. The coconut milk sounds great, I will have to try it.

Thank you all for welcoming me! I will try to post pictures later but I promise they are not that exciting. They are pretty plain white/off white bars.

Sue - if you try the coconut milk make sure to freeze it till it is slushy first. According to what I read you want to keep the temperature down with the milks. I mixed the lye/milk solution into the oils somewhere around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. I suspect that this is the reason why the temperature should be lower but am not certain: http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/cold-process-soap/coconut-milk-soap-volcano-2/

Welcome Ianto And congratulations on your first soaps! I am waiting for my melt and pours to arrive (they are due in tomorrow!!). After I get some practice with MP, I plan on trying my hand at CP. I am practicing patience in the meantime  I so want to get started. I hope you post some pictures in the photo gallery.

Hopefully I am not screwing this up and am posting a picture of the soap I made.

It is okay to post pictures, but there is a forum specifically for posting the pictures in (The Photo Gallery). I am pretty new to the forum myself, so I am not sure what the rules are regarding posting in other places. Your soap looks great! Congratulations!

I don't believe it has to be posted in the gallery. If so I've been breaking the rules myself. Genny/Hazel/lsg/Lindy/Relle??
