I made my first goat milk soap yesterday, it seems to have come out good. I used the evaporated goat milk in a 12 oz can, froze it, broke it up to a slush before adding lye, it turned an orange color, and was pretty thick. I went on to add about 6oz water to this to thin it somewhat. The can said it was double strength with 1/2 the water removed. Question is should I have reconstituted with water before freezing? Also do you try to add in the fat from the goat milk when passing recipe through lye calculater?

You should definitely have reconstitued the milk before adding the lye and make sure you're using distilled water.

It turns orange because the sugar in the milk has caramelised. The best way to prevent this is to make sure the milk is frozen and to ad the sodium hydroxide slowly. Once I have put the soap mix into moulds i leave the moulds in the fridge overnight to prevent the milk from caramelising in the moulds, as milk based soaps have a tendency to generate heat in the moulds.

I find my soaps don't go brown but they do still turn a light beige colour kind of like the bar of soap at the top of this page.
Basically, you need to try and keep the temperature of the milk and subsequent soap mixture as low as possible. I don't even bother heating up the oil.

No you don't need to worry about the fat in the milk when calculating the amount of sodium hydroxide.

I hope I was of some help.

All I have ever made is goat milk soap since I started. I don't freeze my GM at all. I have posted several threads as to the method I use. It turns out great every time. The soap in my avatar is of course GM soap. If you have any other questions after reading those threads, just ask. :)

I follow Soap Maker Man's suggestion. I think he uses fresh goat's milk with a little powder added. Anyway, I use evaporated goat's milk and I don't dilute it at all. Makes my soaps richer and creamier. I guess it depends on the person and the result they want to create.
