This is my attempt at making individually molded shaving soaps. This is for me and my lady friends. It's a KOH only HP with 1.5% SL and 38% water. I also added Kaolin clay and glycerin and SF with Sweet Almond Oil. The scent is BB's Pearberry and the color is BB's Hyacinth lab color. I used a silicone individual round soap mold. This is typical HP so it has a mottled appearance and some small voids here and there. That doesn't matter to me much since this is mainly for my use and to give to some friends. The main thing I am going for is a bar that is hard enough to be held and lathered in the hands without getting too soft, and of course good slip for shaving. This stuff moves pretty fast so I didn't quite get all of the colorant mixed in well. No zap :). It's too soft to try today but I will let you know how it works. The light colored one is turned over to show the other side.

I used BB's Pearberry FO and it's delicious. These are still pretty soft. Thinking adding some NaOH might be in order next time. I'll let them sit for a few weeks and then try them again.

Mine are pretty soft too, kinda like playdoh. I take it since this is for females that you would prefer to not have it living in a mug or container of some sort, correct? Are you simply applying it using your hands? Agreed on the NaOH if you want to harden it up.

Yes, I was thinking that it would be nice not to have a mug thing to hold in the shower. I have arthritis and it fatigues my hands to hold something like that for very long.

I'm curious to know--how has the soap behaved over the past days? Has it firmed up more? How much difference do you think the SL made?

It's still not as hard as I would like. I have left it sitting on my curing rack. I plan to leave it there for a few more weeks and then call it done. IMO this recipe needs to be reworked to make a harder bar. It's great to shave with though. Going to figure out a KOH and NaOH combination for the next batch.

Good to know. I made two batches of shaving soap based on the stearic/coconut oil recipe and they are still about the consistency of very soft goat cheese (although the one with clay is slightly firmer) I bought some SL (I've been meaning to anyway), but wondered if it wouldn't be at least as effective to add NaOH. Think I'll try a 70-30 ratio of KOH to NaOH and see how it does. Appreciate the info!
