Getting a little better

This is my first okay looking soap, it's a plain unscented that I will give to my grandma for christmas. Just made it yesterday I still cant figure out how you guys get those perfectly flat edges and surfaces, but I am happy since I'm still new to this!

Very nice. There's nothing wrong with an uncolored and rustic looking soap. Some people prefer it. But I do know what you mean about how nice looking the smooth soaps are that some people achieve. I've never been able to do it.

Thanks! It was actually an attempt at whipped soap, I used the whipping attachment on my stick blender, but it didn't look "Whipped" and it didn't float lol. Well I will try again next time anyway!!

That might be why your soap ended up a little rough looking since you used the whip attachment. I bet if you try the same recipe again and use the stickblender it would be more smooth. Stick blenders don't create enough air for whipped soap. You really need a hand mixer or a KitchenAid. I'd love to have a KitchenAid mixer but they're out of my price range.

I've had good luck with just a hand mixer. The bars floated. :wink:

eta: I just realized your soap may not have floated because of the recipe. Did you use a large percentage of palm or tallow?

Whipped soap needs a good amount of unmelted, hard oils and a hand mixer (I want a Kitchenaid too Hazel)... I made it once and it was uuuuuuugly (and smelly - Peak's Blueberry Muffin is NASTY in soap) but it floated lol

Grandma's love unscented soap! It's my Nanny's favorite. She says it reminds her of the soap she used to make with her grandmother. It looks great.

Thanks everyone! The recipe I used was 50% olive oil, 20% coconut, 15% lard and 5% castor. I also added a couple of drops of Vitamin E to my oils. I will have to do some more research on whipped soap!

This bar was just a single that I made for my grandma since she's the only one who doesn't like scents. I also made some round green aloe and clover soaps that I'm very happy with I will post pics later

Your recipe sounds great but you need more coconut and lard to achieve a whipped soap. agriffin posted a whipped soap recipe. You have to scroll down a bit to see it.

I've made whipped soap once and followed Nizzy's page. It worked well and I pipped it onto CP cupcake bases. I only have a hand held beater ... and it took a lot of beating, so I've not done it again. It's one of those things I want to do ... but have to allow loads of time for!
