So... Today I was told by a soaper I met that I should be mixing my fragrance oil into a carrier oil to dilute it before using it in my soap. I was under the impression that fo's come pre-diluted and ready to use and that only eo's had to be diluted. Mind you I only use regular old fo's and not some expensive hoity toity super concentrated fo's that may be sold that I haven't ran across yet when ordering them. Can someone tell me why I would need to dilute it into a carrier before adding it to my hp like I would if I used an eo please?

Oh yeah, I went to sell soap today and it was so hot that I caved and came home. Humidity sucks! I couldn't hang so I will try again another day.

I've never heard of having to dilute FOs in a carrier oil. I add the FO to my melted oils and stick blend before I add the lye solution, but don't mix the FO with anything prior to that. Maybe someone else here has heard of what you mentioned and can explain.

When I first started making soap 10 years ago, that was one of the "rules". You saved your superfat oil to add at trace (sweet almond, avocado, etc), you mixed in your FO or EO, then added it.

If it is an FO that seizes or causes ricing or seperation, some people will mix it with a carrier oil in the hopes it won't do that.

Same thing with EOs. I don't think you have to mix an EO with a carrier oil either - I certainly don't!

I agree, I don't mix fragrance oils with a carrier oil at all. If I think it will cause a problem, I add it to the soaping oils and blend well before adding the lye solution.

I add mine to melted oils if cp'ing and add after my soap cools if hp'ing. She was telling me that it has to be diluted like eo's do though so maybe she just needs to learn a lil bit more. I am so thankful to yall on this forum because I have learned so much on here. I look forward to reading your posts ;)

I never pre-dilute mine before soaping either, and mine are concentrated. If you ask me, it's pretty redundant to pre-dilute them since they get diluted anyways as soon as you add them to your soaping oils or to your soap batter at trace.

IrishLass :)

FOs and EOs don't need diluted to add to soap, because they're getting diluted IN the soap. For other products, they're generally being diluted by the product they're in. You just don't use them straight on the skin without diluting. But if you're using the manufacturer specified usage rate for the scent, then it will be diluted at the correct rate once it's mixed into your product, which depending on the type of product, for example a massage oil, the product might BE the carrier oil. :)
