SO last night I made a batch of HP soap, and it didn't fill up my mold as it does normally. I had increased my usual batch size, so I thought that maybe I hadn't measured the new mold correctly. Then today, I realized I totally DIDN'T add the palm oil! :wtf: The weird thing is:
I did the zap test, and NO ZAP! ...I left out 7 ounces of 35 total oil ounces. You would think it would be lye heavy! Should I rebatch? Is it safe to use? I washed my hands with a piece right away, before I realized my mistake, and It seemed fine. But not real moisturizing.
Here is my recipe:
13 oz water
4.9 oz lye
8.7 oz olive
8.7 oz coconut,
8.7 oz crisco,
1.7oz Castor,
7 oz PALM (didn't get added)

I added a little extra glycerin and avocado oil with the clay and oxides that I added, but certainly not enough to balance out 7 missing ounces! Thoughts????

What sf % did you use? Maybe it was high enough to make up for missing palm?

I ran it thru my calc without the palm and the lye amount really isn't that much off than what you got...

Oils 27.8
Lye 3.0
Water 9.2
Total 40.0
After Cure (15% water) 32.1

With no zap, you may have just done a water discount?

That's kind of what I was wondering... If you had planned on something like a 7% superfat, maybe now you just have 1%?

Can you rerun the recipe as you made it through soapcalc and see what it says? Although, I would think if it's not zapping, then surly it's most likely safe, right?

How much avocado and glycerin did you add? Maybe that's where you made up just enough missing oil

I didn't add very much avocado and glycerin, just enough to get 2 colors and some kaolin dispersed. I would say definitely less than 2 oz.

So if it isn't zapping it is safe to use. That said it may not be awesome for skin. Let it cure try it out you might love it. If you don't it would probably make a fine laundry soap. If you really want to rebatch you can of course. If I was rebatching soap that was missing an oil but didn't zap I would probably not add palm to it. If you're going through all that trouble it might be nice to throw a luxury or exotic oil in. Jmo good luck update with how it works out for you.

"...With no zap, you may have just done a water discount? ..."

I want to mention that water discount doesn't have anything to do with whether there is a zap or no-zap. The excess alkalinity (zap/no-zap) is determined by the amounts of the lye and oils used. The water discount relates only to the concentration of the lye solution -- in other words, how much or little water is used to make the lye solution.

"...How much avocado and glycerin did you add? Maybe that's where you made up just enough missing oil ..."

And another point of clarification -- glycerin doesn't saponify, so the added glycerin the OP added won't change whether the soap is or isn't lye heavy. Just the added avocado...

Ok, I rebatched both loaves. Yes, I had made a double batch! I just added in the missing palm and some shea. Hopefully it will turn out! I cut the sandalwood already, and it looks good. A bit moist and the tops aren't as nice as I usually do, but hopefully it will cure out fine. It shredded and melted quite easily!
