so which lasts longer? fragrance oils or essential oils?? i have fragrance oils but they dont seem to be that strong which means i need to use quite a bit of it in my soap.

how much EO or FO do u guys usually use in a pound of soap?

I don't use EOs much, but I think *generally* you use a smaller amount EO than FO. I used a very small amount of Peppermint EO (like 1/3-1/2oz) in a batch over 2pounds, and it smells very nice and definitely like peppermint!

The normal "guideline" for FOs is 0.7oz/PPO. I like stronger scented soap and don't sell, so I tend to be a little heavyhanded with fragrance and normally use more like 0.9-1oz/PPO.
Many less expensive FOs are diluted and you'll need to use more of those than the higher quality ones... again, in general at least. So far that has absolutely held true for me, I will now only order from more reputable vendors whose FOs I know are good quality. It's not a bargain if you need to use twice as much of the cheap stuff and still have it fade in no time, LOL!

totally dependent on the EO and the FO
the amount (of either) is typically between 0.5 oz per pound of oils and 1 oz per pound of oils.

What scents are weak for you? And where did you get them?

I use 1 oz per lb, hp 1/2 of that. Eos i dont use much, too spendy, but i do like lemongrass.

I have purchased from gelluminations. these are my 1st FO's i have purchased. even though i don't have any experience with others, i have a feeling these are watered down, such as the french vanilla and coconut lime. i also bought sandalwood but it was amazingly HORRIBLE! it smelled nothing like it! i did a quick review before purchasing from them last month and i saw quite a few people saying that their fragrances are a hit or miss.

can anyone recommend any place for reasonable priced FO's? i have seen a few website that price them reasonably but the shipping its ridiculous!!

Wholesale Supplies offers free shipping on all of their FOs, EOs, EO blends, and a handful of other items. They have a large selection of fragrances and most that I've purchased from them have been at least decent, some have been very good.

Hey Chris....I've used some of the FOs from Gelluminations (BrighterScents, same thing) and some of them are ok, some not, just like you said. But it's also a great deal personal preference also....for instance I rather like their Sandalwood. It smells "woody" not perfumey like I like, but I haven't soaped it yet...this is just my opinion of how it smells OOB (out of bottle). I'm getting ready to make a small batch of Sandalwood Rose here in a few minutes and I'll be trying it.

You could try Wholesale Supplies Plus (www.wholesalesupplies.com). They currently offer no shipping on EOs or FOs. They're prices aren't that bad and you can order 2oz. amounts for all the FOs and most of the EOs. Hopefully that's still the case when income tax return gets here!!

Anyway, I just made a batch of Eucalyptus & Spearmint (both FOs from Brighterscents) and I added a tsp. of Kaolin clay (24oz. of oils) to try to anchor the scent. I have no idea how well (if at all) its going to work, but I hope so.

That explains it. :) They're pretty notoriously weak and I think most new soapers have been sucked in at least once by their cheap prices... I know I have!
Try one of these:

http://www.soapsupplies.net/
http://www.brambleberry.com/

http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/

My favorites are ScentWorks and DayStar. I have liked everything I've ordered from SoapSupplies. I haven't tried BrambleBerry's FOs yet but their service is excellent and I have only heard good things about them. Wholesalesupplies is hit or miss for me, I have liked half of what I have ordered from them, same with Natures Garden.
I have a couple of other suppliers on my "must try" list, JustScents and SymphonyScents are on the top of that list.

Vendors that I won't purchase from again:
Gelluminations
Brighter Scents (same company as gelluminations)
Tennessee candles... some FOs were OK but the majority only so-so.
HTH!!

yep.

so you guys aren't holding out any hope for me with the adding of a little Kaolin clay to help anchor the scents??

Oh well, I'll let ya all know if it helps or not....i have a LOT of their FOs so I'm looking for something that'll help make them work better. Again, SOME of them are pretty strong enough....like the Love Spell for instance. I just used a tiny bit of Basil Sage & Mint in some MP and seems to be ok so far. it's been like two weeks and still smells good and strong....

I use WSP & Daystar for 90% of my scets.

I do keep 1 or 2 scents stocked from: Millcreek, Taylored Concepts, Save on Scents, Wellington, Bittercreek.

I have realy tried to cut back on how many places I order from. It's so much easier, not to metion cheaper on shipping, when you can do most all of your shopping in 1 or 2 spots.

at what level are you using them? or did you already post that info and I missed it?

If you were talking to me, Carebear, I tried 1 tsp. kaolin clay in a 24oz. oils batch. The second batch I made I ended up adding 1.5 tsp. (same oils). .6oz. eucalyptus and .6oz. spearmint. Both FOs from BrighterScents.

peakcandles has nice fos, 10- 1 ouncers for 20, but the shipping is 9$,( my fav)
also bertsheaven scents- same deal
naturesgarden,
brambleberry- good fos but kinda spendy
elements bath and body- good fos,
wsp- love the NO shipping, ive liked everyone i bought, except brown sugar, which totally faded!
Ive shopped gelluminations, some ok, some very weak.
Millcreek- ok, honey butter is awesome and orange chili pepper.

I've been buying all my FO's from WSP and really like them...the only problem I have is knowing how much to use per batch??? I wish they had a FO calculator!
I only do 1 1/2 lb batches right now(due to space constraints) and can't seem to get the right amount of scent for my soaps.
