It may seem expensive to some but believe me it's cheap compared my husbands! Can we say, hunting, not just local, fishing, where the big ones are (Alaska), boating, white water rafting, need I go on? And are there any horse people out there?

heh, I would say it is one of my cheaper hobbies. :p

When I started making soap for my family back in the seventies it was to save money. We would butcher our pig, I would render the lard, make a few batches of soap, put the baby in the back pack and hop a bus to the BIG city. We would go to the park and sell our soap to all the "PEACED OUT" people bring home our 20 or 30 dollars and go buy a new wiener pig.

We got a new pig, lard for cooking and soap for a year. Every body was happy. But then my soap making took over my life and became an ADDICTION and I just couldn't stop! And addictions are expensive. One sign would be "paying in cash and sneaking supplies into the house" ( I'm talking about you, roseb)

So, if you make more soap than your family and friends can use you are not a hobbyist you are an ADDICT and you need to join a "group". ( Oh wait, this is a group) ?????

Step 1. We admit we are powerless over soap - that our lives have become unmanageable.

Tell me about show horses and kids showing them! My husband now never trusts anything that eats while you are sleeping. I used to tell him that the horses were such a wholesome activity for kids ( which I still think is true) and they would be so busy with the horses, they wouldn't become involved with drugs and such. He says drugs would have been cheaper! Seriously, I don't regret it. It was wonderful, but expensive.
As for the soap... I give it to absolutely everyone and it takes care of much of my Christmas list. Either my friends and family are really dirty or really clean people, because they keep asking for more. The rest, I donate. Once the "basics" are taken care of, the cost of the rest seems to be reasonable for a hobby.
You will find many tips on finding creative and inexpensive soap supplies on this forum. I'm always amazed at the things people use to make beautiful and inexpensive soap.
Also, I factor in the expense of a psychiatrists vs. a day of soap making. NO BRAINER!
