I just received a lot of lard from a friend who butchered a pig this weekend. It's so creamy and white and I'm excited to make soap with it! I've heard nothing but great things about the qualities lard imparts in soap.

Am I strange to say that I think the lard smells heavenly? Like a deep rich bacon smell...I do love bacon!

I made a few mostly lard batches last week and cut off and used a little chunk of the first one this morning, I really like it. Funny how something so tasty is also good to wash with ;)

Probably a stupid question, but can you get lard at the grocery store? I'd love to try it.

Yay! I have to go to Walmart to get castor oil, so I can just add this to my list. Thank you!!

or in 1# bricks. more expensive but still fine.

In walmart it's in the baking aisle (in tubs on bottom shelf).
in grocery stores (usually the 1# bricks) it can be anywhere since it's not refrigerated. If you can't find it - ask!

I LOVE lard, just remember to not let it overheat when you melt it to prevent a strong piggy smell.

When you heat the lard, do you just bring it to melt point? i really do not want piggy smelling soap. I heat my oils on the stove just to 100F. It that okay for the lard?

Thanks!

I get lard at walmart too...the green and white tub. I finally got my hands on some GV shortening (always out of stock)...the one with tallow in it...so am looking forward to see how it turns out/compares.

I use a double boiler for melting the lard and CO and have the burner on the lowest setting...and I take it off the burner as soon as everything in melted.

I found the Manteca & was thinking about buying it. In soapcalc, is it the pig tallow option? I want to make sure I get it correct in there.
