Ive been doing a lot of research into lip balm making before taking the plunge and actually trying to make it. Ideally I would like to make lip balm versions of my best soap recipes so its kind of like a set. Anyway, one of them has lemongrass EO in it and I would love to put it in my lip balm. I did find out that it is ingestible and therefore safe. My question is, how many drops can I add in there for.... lets say... and 8 oz. batch?

Where do you get your lemongrass eo? They should be able to tell you how much to use. I did notice on WSP's site it says 0.04% and then I saw somewhere else 2%, so I'd definitely ask where you bought it from.

Most of the places I've seen it sold it says to keep away from mucous membranes and that it's a known skin irritant, so I don't know if that one would be the best for lip balm.

I did get it from WSP! I guess ill just have to give it a shot and test it on myself...kinda scary. Hope I dont end up looking like Téa Leoni on Fun with Dick and Jane

I purchase edible EO's from brambleberry.com. They label all the editable EO's. BB's lemongrass is not labeled edible, so I'd venture to say neither is what you purchased from wsp.

They do have an edible lemon EO, though.

Saying EO are edible is a line a lot of people won't cross...there are so many people who think EOs are one and the same and could end up ingesting one that's really toxic...

in any case, start by adding very little - lemongrass is quite poweful - perhaps a dozen drops or so and see if you think that's enough. You can probably go up to about 25 drops safely for an 8oz batch.

yes it is very strong... I would agree to starting slowly... let's just say I have been "burned" by lemongrass in the past  be careful!

I'm using the term as brambleberry uses it. Some EO's should not be ingested at all. I would not ingest lemongrass EO, for instance.

i actually was planning on starting a lot lower than that, perhaps 4 drops for 8 oz. it has such a powerful scent. And I guess I have to check my sources again but i did read that it is ingestible

I believe it can be, but you would need food grade (try Scent Works?). New Directions states that its oils should ONLY be used for external use. I suspect this is more of a liability thing or a reflection of the processing/purity than a restriction on that type of oil.

Good deduction, my dear Watson!
