I recently made some CP soap using peppermint oil, and while it is minty and refreshing, I can't shake the association with confectionery. The straight peppermint has a thin, high, almost cloying aroma, whereas what I'm looking for is something fresher, richer and rounder, more leafy, more herbaceous, perhaps even earthy. Would a blend of peppermint and spearmint get me there? Perhaps even a touch of clove-bud oil? Anything else?

There are different distillations of peppermint, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 1st distillation is the most herbaceous of the three, the higher you get the more candy-like it is. I wouldn't add spearmint. I made a spearmint and lime soap and the spearmint made me sick while it dried. I smelled nothing but that and it smelled just like gum. ugh

try a mint and eucalyptus blend or a mint/spearmint/euc blend with the ratio of eucalyptus to mint at maybe 3:1.

Rosemary is also nice and/or a touch of citrus.

HTH!

I also have found cornmint to be more herbaceous and budget friendly too.
