I have made quite a few batches in my short time making soap and have had no real issues. But yesterday I made a soap using sweet almond oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, fresh in date lard and beef tallow, shea butter and olive oil pomace that had white sage, palo santo, alkanet root and indigo steeped in it for around a week or a little longer give or take. it also has 2 tbs ground bladderwrack, 1/2tbs may chang EO, 1 tbs beetroot powder. this base made roughly 2.5-3lbs of soap base

I unmolded them this morning and found a few of my mini soap sticks had orange-ish spots along the top edge and corners, it does not smell bad in smells like may chang EO but again only a few bars have these spots out of 12 I think 6 or less have these spots.

I also had enough of this base yesterday to fill 5 unicorn molds and all 5 of those soaps do not have orange spots. So I'm wondering is it really DOS or could it be the EO, the OOP (olive oil pomace) that was steeped with the the above bits in it, the ground bladderwrack or maybe the beetroot powder.

Do you have a pic? What color were the molds you used and have you used them before? (Some red silicone molds do bleed onto soaps in warm tones.) were your molds squeaky clean when you started?

I have a feeling it’s a combo of the mold and all your additives/herbs. If there was a hint of an old oil in the mold that could have reacted with some of the plants then it could start a change. Or even a heat difference for some reason. I could say for sure without a picture.

I'll see about getting a picture(s) once my DD takes a nap *fingers crossed*. As a matter of fact the mini stick mold is red did not know they could bleed color kinda glad I did not make mini cakes with it now. The molds were washed in hot soapy water And throughly dried before use as well.

Couple of pics of the orange spots on the soap. And one of the unicorn soap.

That is from the mold I think
I hope it is from the mold as the soap does not smell off.. I'm wondering if it could be from the may change (litsea) EO I used? Also did the zap test on the soap no battery taste/jolt from it tried a bit on my arm ( I'm impatient) feels clean and soft after. Believe that is cuz my soap is 8-10 on cleaning and 48+ on conditioning so in other words will clean but not dry your skin out and turn it into a dessert lol. But I really can't wait to see what it's like after the 4 weeks drying (cure) time.

I agree, it looks like mold transfer. My first soap was made in a red loaf mold and ended up looking like a block of cheese. I don't buy red molds anymore
Sadly I have not found this mold in other colors. Oh btw thanks Obsidian for letting me know about noughy hair care in on of my other posts been using it for round a week now along with my new shower head filter and my hair feels great and thicker to boot!
