I've been soaping for about 10 years and only ever had DOS on a batch of 100% olive oil castile. This year, using the same recipes and techniques I've always used, I'm getting DOS on almost every batch. I made a batch of lavender that got DOS at about 3 weeks out. I thought it might be my oo, so I bought a new container from a different supplier. Still got DOS. I thought it might be my refined shea, so I bought another package. Still DOS. I'm going broke and nuts trying to cure it. I just got some Vitamin E capsules and some Rosemary Extract Oil to see if that will help. I'm in the midst of making 3 batches of soap. Please don't release the soap gremlins until I'm finished!!!

I thought it took longer than 3 weeks to start going rancid. I sure hope the REO and Vit E do the trick for you .

I thought so, too! It was a very expensive batch to have to throw away! :( Although, I'm glad that it wasn't something that I sent to my retailers. I'd have hated to think that they had rancid soap on their hands.

as a newb, i guess i still don't understand DOS.

is it rancid FO's/EO's? Or is it rancid base oils? Could it be helped by increasing the lye, to lower the superfatting? (not trying to suggest I know anything, just trying to wrap my fat head around it) :)

any additives in your soap? like bits of lavender?

can you post a picture , it might help someone come up with an idea or with something that isn't dos related ?

Yeah, I'd like to see a pic too. I wonder if it's DOS or something else....
Sorry you're having so much trouble.

That stinks! Post some pics and maybe someone will have some info to help you get out of this awful rut!

Sorry, been too busy to check back lately. I can't post picks because I tossed all the soap. It was definitely dos. The spots and the odor are unmistakable. My oils had all been recently ordered from my usual, reputable supplier, but I suppose they could have passed on a bad batch. The strange thing is that it isn't every batch of soap. It happened to my straight lavender and a lavender blend. I thought it might have been a bad batch of EO. Then my lime margarita, and my nag champa developed it. None of my other soaps that use the same oils have had any problems. No weird additives. Nothing that I haven't been doing/using for years without problems. It's an absolute mystery to me

I have a new batch of oils on the way, so I'll see how it goes. Between that and the Vitamin E and ROE, maybe I'll be okay.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Avalon: That is a mystery. I hope whatever it is you figure it out and if you do, please post it...and if you don't; hopefully it won't happen again.

Weak lye can cause excessive superfatting, which can promote DOS. If you have any reaosn to suspect the quality of your lye, then it may be your problem. You could try a sample with 0% superfatting and see what it does...
