Aaaah, I'm sorry that's happening to you!

What are DO's? Is the colorant in an oil base? Is the peppermint in an oil base? If either of those is in an oil base, it could be that the oil has gone bad.

Does your soap have a rancid smell? Are you sure it's DOS & not some other weird discoloration, maybe being caused by the colorant or peppermint?

dos

for the past 10 years i have bought all my e/oils from www.libertynatural.com ioutstanding quality and service!!! have never had a bad batch from the peppermint or patchouli. is yours a pure essential oil? could it be a blend? is it from a reputable dealer? have you spoke with the company?

I've had the same problem with Lavender EO. The only bars that ever went rancid & developed DOS were scented with that same EO, so I have a fresh bottle, but from the same supplier. I haven't tested it yet.

Okay, I use only Essential Oils, I have gotten a new bottle of peppermint oil, and a I've tried even various Patchouli Oils, chinese, indonesian, only to have the same results, early Dos. In the peppermint I use a powdered earth mined pigment, I went from 1/2 teaspoon, to barely a 1/16 tsp. of colorant. This past time I put on top peppermint tea, dried, just a sprinkling, and it seemed to get yellow around it first!! My other oils are fresh, I do use some soy, but thinking of ditching it. I use olive, palm, coconut. My supplier seems very reputable, only packing in the best aluminum, but lined bottles, very large company. I made batch before last that still hasn't dos, but this past batch did, very strange. I'm thinking could maybe I insulate those two types too hot, do they spoil easy. Does peppermint and patchouli easily rancid?

I don't know about peppermint, but definitely NOT patchouli. Patchouli ages & gets better as it ages.

dos

do you use single molds or tray mold-how big is the tray? how long do you keep it covered after pouring and how long before you unmold/cut the soap? it could also be maybe the temp or humidity after you unmold, or do you see them immediatley after uncovering? is the soap getting warm after you pour? are you oven processing? are your molds plastic or wooden? there are so many different variables! i have heard some say that if your soap doesnt heat up well (gel) after pouring, it is more likely to get dos. how old are your oils? do any smell strong or kind of off?

patchouli and peppermint dos

Hi and thanks for the help all.
I use crude molds now made with pressed board with a sort of linoleum look finish, although I line the mold with freezer paper, except the ends. I cover them immediately, with lots of blankets, I usually get a quick gel, I never let it get cold, the next day I take out of molds (usually), and usually cut then too. Not always. I guess I never think about the humidity, in the summer months, Indiana is very humid. Winter we have our heaters on. I may need try to look into that. Oils all smell well. My palm and coconut I guess I keep the longest, but I buy olive about 5 separate gallons at a time, and it goes pretty quickly. I get my soy the same way, but I wouldn't be supprised if the soy isn't the problem. I buy it at aldis. Not knocking aldis, just saying not probably high quality. I am getting ready to get new molds, I pour thick now as I rough up the top of the soap, so here is another question, when I pour in long narrow molds, it is hard to level, I'm wondering will it be harder in a more rectangular mold or easier? Sounds stupid, but if i pound the mold on the table it doesn't level, will it in a rectangular? I've always used the long narrow.
Thanks again, happy soap making.

come to think of it, i used to use liquid soy a number of years ago and every batch got dos within days of unmolding-i gave up and used CRISCO brand and it went away. i also have a small oscillating fan i place in the room i dry soap in. i find the soap dries quicker and more evenly. i live in the south and in the summer i run a small room dehumidifer and you wouldnt believe how much moisture is in the air when you have 4-5 racks of soap drying! especially after it rains!

peppermint dos

That's it, I'm done with soy as of today! I will try the fan, I guess I was worried that it would dry up on the outside, but still need to evaporate on the inside.

dos

you need gentle air circulation to more evenly dry the soap. just dont blow directly onto bars. i tried that-directly blasting it thinking it would speed up the drying, but it warped the bars. i had a bunch of hump-backed little bars!

let us know how you do on the soy issue. you may try skipping the pigment to begin with too, just to be safe.

on the long narrow molds, i really dont know. i use a 9.5x12.5 tray, but thinking about loaf molds. i do rtcp-what i thought was i could pour to the top of the mold, rap it on the counter to dispell air pockets, run a knife over the top to smooth, then waxpaper and lid-and insulate.

is that what you were thinking?
