Dog Shampoo Bar

I know I have seen posts on here before about making dog shampoo bars or comments about dog shampoo bars...could someone point me in the right direction? Or give me any pointers? I haven't made one before but in the past week I have had 3 different people contact me and ask if i made this

Other people have made them, some say they have had success with them, but my advice is consult with a good vet. I did, and my vet said to NEVER use human soap on my dog. Dog's skin is VERY different than humans' it is much thinner and far more sensitive. They do not have the same protective layer people do. Personally I would never use an alkaline soap on my dog, and if I won't use it myself I wouldn't make it for anyone else, either.

I am sure others will come along with better advice for how to do it should you decide to go ahead.

I have people purchasing my unscented goat milk soap to bath their dogs in with no complaints.

Never used spas with EO or FO in them, they can be qite toxic to them. Dogs have a different pH then people do on their skin.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, previous threads about this show up, but looking at the answers that were given in the past, I'd say most of them were guessing what works and what doesn't, so that's why I'm not including the links.

Check with the vet.

I've made a couple of small test batches using Lindy/Genny's very mild shampoo bars, and subbed out some of the oils with emu oil. Added colloidal oatmeal, a little calendula petals, and a very small amount of lavender EO. My vet office will be the first to try them out, along with my own dog. Not going to think about selling them until I've had a bunch of feedback and done even more research... And I wouldn't even think about selling them for cats - would include a disclaimer to NOT use on cats but to check with a good vet on how to bathe a cat...

Times sure have changed. I had a dog many years ago and I washed him every Friday night with Johnson's Baby shampoo. Back then, we just washed the dog and didn't think about it. My dog never had any issues. A few years ago, I made a very nice dog shampoo bar and I could not GIVE it away. It was very gentle and I made sure that it was a good fit for a dog's skin. After the the doggie bar bombed, I made a liquid soap for dogs that yielded the very same poor results. It is always good to hear when soapers have success selling dog products. I was not one of those pooch success stories.

Most of the dog owners in this area have them as outside dogs, so it wouldn't sell well locally, and honestly, I wouldn't buy a dog shampoo bar made by someone I didn't know. I've never used handmade soap (bar or liquid) on dogs, even when we were professionally showing our Chows, so I will stick to the surfactant based 'poos.
