Hey guys. My little dog had a seizure for the first time today. This is the first seizure I have witnessed actually, and it was really scary but I realized right away what was going on and we rushed over to the emergency vet. We had his glucose and electrolytes tested right away and will be going in tomorrow (to our regular vet) for another blood test to check for kidney and liver problems.

If anyone has experience with this, please share. I don't know what to expect and I'm scared. It's comforting to know that at least he isn't in any pain when it happens and doesn't know what's going on.

Oh my...how is he doing? I know nothing. Hope they figure it out quickly and that it won't happen again. How old is he? Pics??

Someone I walk with said his dog has seisures, he is 14 yrs old and the vet said just to let him go through it and keep an eye on him so he doesn't hurt himself and thats it. I suppose because this doggy is old they are not doing any active treatment. I will ask tomorrow and let you know the full story.

My daughters dearly loved 'Charlie', a six year old moddle (maltese x poddle) was diagnosised as having epilepsy after having several seizures a couple of years ago. He takes medication twice a day ... which not only is mostly controlling his seizures, but it seems to have made him a much calmer dog.

Charlie has to have regular blood tests, so that the 'levels' of his blood can be checked, but mostly it's all good.

I hope your little fur baby is good!

When my mom's beagle started having seizures, she was getting up there in years, we found the best thing was to just sit by her and pet her and talk soothingly to her. She might not really realize we're there but the seizure did seem to ease up a little when we did it and when she came around she was happy to see us.

He is doing well today. In fact, he is completely normal - you wouldn't know anything had happened. He went in today to have all his organs checked out and got some blood work done. We will find out tomorrow whether his kidneys, liver, and thyroid look normal.

They said to keep a seizure journal and write everything that happens to him during the seizure, how long it lasts, etc. They said he could have one every day for the rest of his life or he may never have one again! So it's hard not knowing but as long as I know he can still be normal and healthy, that is what I need. If he needs to have medication, then I guess that's what we will do! I just really hope it's nothing to do with his liver or kidneys.

He is 3 years old. There he is last year in his Christmas scarf!

tasha,

What a cutie! I'm sorry to hear he's having seizures. I wish I could help but I don't know anything. I hope he stays healthy and doesn't have any more.

What a cutie.

I used to have 2 long haired chihuahuas that had epileptic seizures from time to time. No medication was given and they lived to about 14 years old.

Yay!! Pics! He is soo handsome...love. His scarf coordinates with him perfectly. :D Make sure you keep us updated with regular pictures of little mister.

Our dog started to have a seizure problem. The vet asked if she did consume anything out of the ordinary (some things could cause neurological issues). He mentioned that with that scenario, you may get some initially and then they dwindle. A brain tumor or epilepsy can be other diagnosis.

Our vet said that if the seizure is lasting over 4 minutes, that it is likely that the dog will likely need medical attn to get it to stop; especially a concern with seizures that happen in clusters (she would have 4 in a day and then none for a couple of weeks). Trying to keep our dog from trying to walk when she didn't have her strength back was hard, and she would often want lots of water and pace/be hungry. Another thought is that their muscles can also be in a bit of pain for a few days due to the siezing of their muscles; it can be painful. So if that seems to be the case, talk to the vet about how to handle that.

I hope you hear an easy solution from the vet. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see them having one and worrying that they are going to be ok. Hoping that it will be a minor issue,
J

The vet did call back and let us know that his liver values were a little bit high, meaning something was abnormal with his liver. She said the most likely thing is that he ate something toxic that we didn't know about - probably something out of the yard. He hasn't had another seizure yet but it hasn't been quite a week. She said we would recheck his liver in 4 weeks.

The scary thing is that we had just started introducing a new food 3 days before this happened. I won't know for sure but we immediately thought of the food. The day of the seizure we removed the new food and fed only their previous food just in case it was related to that.

But he also does eat a lot of things out of the yard. He loves to chew on leaves, grass, bugs. I have witnessed this dog eat small sticks and even rocks. So there is no telling. I am keeping a closer eye on him overall but especially when he goes outside now. But in the summer they like to lay out there for most of the day so I'm not watching them constantly.

OMG - I LOVE those ears.

I hate it when the babies get sick because they can't talk to you and tell you what's wrong. So glad he's not had another seizure and hope it was a one-time thing.
