I have some illipe, kokum, and mango butter that I want to try putting in my soap (as well as other items I am experimenting with).

For those of you who use butters in your soaps, have you noticed the smell of the butter in the soap? All of mine are refined, and I notice the illipe butter almost smells like rubber tires.

However, illipe butter is the hardest butter so I figure I can use less to get a nice hard bar, which means it will go farther.

So does the smell carry over?

It carried into my hippy soap even against the patchouli and tea tree, but that was at 12.5%.

Fascinating. At 48% the chocolate scent of my cocoa butter doesn't carry over into my soap in any appreciable amount (I can kinda tell it was there because I KNOW, but others can't.

That's amazing. I never used it before and so this soap is my only experience with it.

Castor 6.25%
Cocoa Butter 12.5%
CO 25%
Hemp 25%
Jojoba 6.25%
EVOO 25%

30 drops (1/2 tsp) Tea Tree EO
30 drops (1/2 tsp) Patchouli EO

10% lye discount

The overwhelming scent is the patch, but the cocoa butter comes through as a secondary pretty clearly though a bit subtle. Maybe some of the other fats are contributing to what I think is the cocoa butter smell or something.

I've soaped illipe, kokum, mango and cocoa butter, and their scents have never come through in my soap except for my natural cocoa butter, but that's only ever a temporary thing. It goes away pretty quick during cure.

It's funny how you mention that your illipe almost smells like rubber tires. I love the natural scent of illipe butter. It doesn't remind me of rubber tires, though. It reminds me a lot of the paste that we used to use in grade school in art class. We used to eat it when the teacher wasn't looking.

IrishLass :)

This bar has only been curing about 3 weeks now, maybe it will go away after while. I used the 1 oz Queen Helene 100% Solid Cocoa Butter sticks that the sell in the beauty supply. I can't see anything on their packaging that suggests any artificial color or fragrances added.

And I did use 6.25% in my grapefruit soap, that was scented with 7 ml of EO and superfatted at 10% and there is not even the slightest hint of it in there.

Perhaps it is the hemp oil? I will be the first to admit that I don't have a perfect nose, but I swear I smell it. :)

Hot ****, that stuff's expensive. That would make for some pricey soap at that cost.

LOL...yuk! It could be this batch I got. I only ordered a small container from Mountain Rose a while back. But it is super hard so I thought it would make a nice hard bar.

I am going to try it today and see what happens.

Thanks guys!

Verdict on Illipe Butter

Ok, so I made my regular batch and added 10% Illipe. I really expected this bar to harden quicker and harder than my other bars.

I will say that the strong smell of the Illipe butter did not transfer over.

The bar doesn't lather as well as some of my others. In fact it seems to take a little work to lather. And it is creamy, not bubbly.

It has been a couple of weeks and while it is mostly hard, and I already have it listed, I think it will make for a nice healthy bar.

Final thought is that for the money, I am going to use a different butter.

If you are interested in seeing the outcome, these pics will zoom in huge.

I love that soap- it's gorgeous and on my faves. :)

None of my butter smells have ever carried over into my soaps.
