I just want to try to sell my soap at the fair show. Do you need special licenses to do so? I just want to try it for a couple of times, before I decide if I want to do it even part time. Any advices?
for starters, and JUST for starters it depends on where you live.
you may be required to register, collect taxes, have special labeling requirements, etc.
country?
state?
municipality?
rules of the craft fair - may require insurance (you should require it for yourself)
When i was trying to find out what I needed to sell soap, the only way I got a clear cut answer was when I called my local town zoning office (which i got from 411) and explained to them what I wanted to do, and they told me what I could/couldn't do and how to do it right.
Ditto. Be aware that some show's require each vendor to carry their own liability insurance as well. You will need a state tax ID, because you have to collect sales tax in most states.
Selling soap isn't just about setting up a table, paying the fee & selling your soap. There's waaaaaaaaaaaaay more to it than that. Do you have a plan for repeat customers? How will you sell & distribute soap to them? If you use your home as a place for repeat customers to pick up soap, you've turned your home into a business. What are the city zoning laws? There's more, but that's just a few of the things to consider.
