I am new to liquid goat milk soap but finally have success from the help of this forum! I was making more paste last night and I am almost certain I forgot to add glycerin to my milk/lye mixture before adding to the oils and blending to trace. My paste doesn’t zap but is a bit more “jello” consistency than normal. And I am about 15oz short of paste (the amount of glycerin I should have added).

Is it ruined? Can I add glycerin now before diluting? The no zap is throwing me since I have way less liquid than the recipe called for.

Thank you so much!

Zaps come from undissolved lye, or from using more lye than is needed to saponify the oils. Since you didn't do either of those, why would you expect your soap to zap?

To say it another way, using less liquid will not make your soap zap, unless you didn't use enough liquid to dissolve all of the KOH.

As for the forgotten glycerin, just add it during dilution. All good :)

Thank you for this explanation! I always figured if the ratio of liquid/KOH wasn’t right, then it’d be lye heavy and zap. This is helpful to know my thinking was flawed!

Thank you for your input! I will try adding the glycerin now to be mix in! Would I need to add heat and let it blend to reach paste form before adding water? Or just add it all at once? Or does it not matter either way at this point?

You are very welcome. To me it would be easiest to add the glycerin with hot dilution water. Of course, if you are only diluting part of the paste, then you will only add the corresponding percentage of the total glycerin. :)
