I'm trying to make some diaper rash cram for a friend who's having a baby
this is what I came up with

1 tsp mineral oil
2 tsp corn starch (was thinking arrow root)
2 tsp zinc oxide
2 tsp antibiotic ointment (infused olive oil callandula, chamomile, arnica with beeswax)

can I use Lanolin instead of mineral oil?
I had also seen that cod liver oil was ok is this true?
do i need to make a new infusion to exclude arnica?

Sorry it's been many years since i had babies and while i made their baby food at home I used whatever the store had on their butts.

thanks everyone for the help.

You're right about not using the mineral oil, but I'd use something liquid like safflower instead.
My baby balm has a high amount of safflower and is greatly appreciated by my guineapiglets :p
Use less zinc oxide; more like 2 to 5% as it sinks to the bottom when used to much.
I'd go for way less cornstarch too and up the liquid oil instead.
Yes, it would be better to exlude arnica in your infusion as baby's diaper area often has damaged skin.

Thank you,
I think this recipe i found was an old one and figured there had to be a way to make it better.

do you think arrorw root is ok to use in place of corn starch?

I make a butt cream, but it's more like a lotion bar with zinc oxide added. I would not add antibiotic ointment to it. It might have worked for you, but why take a chance?

This isn't something I've made it's a recipe i found and it didn't seem right so i'm trying to make it better so i can make it I'm not going to use antibiotic ointment i don't feel it's safe, I don't think it's something i even used on my kids before they were 2.

my baby is 18, I wasn't making anything but baby food when he was a baby, and i used cloth diapers to avoid the rash.

You guys are the best ones to ask and get pointed in the right direction.

BTW is it alright to use bee's wax to thicken it up?

I don't think you need it at all for a salve, I'd start with:
1/3 beeswax
1/3 soft butters (like mango, coconut, shea etc.)
1/3 liquid oils, (like safflower, peach kernal, almond, avocado)

In my balm I use alfa bisabolol, the active substance in chamomile, because alfa bisabolol hardly gives any chance of intollerances or allergies.
Also, I use infused calendula, zinc oxide and very little tea tree & lavender.

I was planning to pick up mango butter saturday and i have some she and cocoa butter already.

this recipe is much simpler thank you, I'm not big on cornstarch or talc so I had huge reservations about that part.

I'll infuse enough oil to try this with a couple different oils and see which i like best.

I've not seen any place to buy alfa bisabolol maybe a health food store?

Cocoa is really hard, so if you want to use that, use less beeswax or more liquid oils.

http://www.bulkactives.com/abisabololnatural.htm; but if it works for you and the baby, chamomile is fine too.
It's just that I'm going to sell, and especially with babies I try to keep everything as low risk as possible.
And I guess bisabolol is just a lot easier to get in Europe :?

Good luck and pics please!
