When you guys are creating new scents with EO..do you just mix a little bit of this and a little bit of that until you get one that you think smells good or is it a method to the madness?

There are different families of scents, greens, earthy, florals, woody, herbal, spicey, citrus etc. and those families can be divided further. I suggest that you do some research and reading from reputable sources. I use the Aftelier natural perfume wheel as a reference for creating blends.

Here's what I do - I get some cotton buds and dip an EO that you want to try and put it in a plastic bag, then do the same with the others you'd like to go with it , tie it up and leave for a few hours, then open and sniff. If you like it well and good, if not, try some more combinations.

As a perfumer, I have a process that I go through. First off, I brainstorm a bit in my head, choosing different fragrance types as well as note types. Would oakmoss smell nice with tobacco absolute? It might. I place a drop of each oil on a testing strip and try it. If it doesn't smell right I might add something from another fragrance class to balance it out. It's a lot of research knowing which scents will have what effect when added to another. Some oils can easily overtake while others will fix mess ups.

I recommend reading up on natural perfumery, it really helps when you're trying to make something new.
