I am about to make my first batch and want to use crayons to color my soap. I am going to make an 8 lb batch. I ran everything through the caluclator and got all the specs on the oils, but nothing about how the crayons will effect the batch, i don't want the whole batch the same color, so i will divide it. and color 1/4 of the batch and the rest will be the base color. if i'm correct i should divide the base at trace, but will it be hot enough to melt the crayons and will the crayons effect the lye calculations.. sorry for the wordy post, just needing some advice. thanx bill

Crayons are not a good idea for making soap, not when there are so many great soap colours available both natural and not so natural. If you are wanting to use things that are in your home already play with some of the spices you have there in the house. Paprika, curry, parsley, cinnamon, cocoa powder are just a few. The trick here is to not get too carried away because they some of them can be irritating as well.

I have moved this over to the CP Forum so you can get more responses.

There seems to be quite a lot of controversial views on using crayola to color soap. Personally I would not do that since you can make perfectly good soap with no colorant, no scent. I am more concern about how the soap cleanse and make my skin look good, rather than the soap itself looking good!

In Dave's Garden discussion, someone mentioned melt broken crayola with a little oil in the microwave. You can read up on both forums below:

If its for your own use, I don't see why you couldn't use crayons. But as Lindy said there are better options, probably in your kitchen right now. I have gotten a wonderful bright peach swirl from paprika infused oil. Also perhaps making a smaller batch for your first time would be wise. Its easier to handle and if it doesn't come out the way you want, its less waste. My first batch I did not color or sent. I wanted to see how plain soap behaved, smelled, and felt (after the cure). And I'm not sorry I did.
