I have religiously tried to keep my cleansing value under 20 in SoapCalc. But every now and then a thread pops up that talks about 100% Coconut bars, or 80% coconut, 20% butter. The 80/20 formula ends up being 54 cleansing and 19 conditioning--something that I would avoid like the plague!

I read that if you superfat, you don't have to worry about the SoapCalc values--the soap will still be moisturizing. If that is the case, I would like to use a whole lot more coconut oil to get a harder bar and bubblier lather. It's just confusing since even SoapCalc only recommends a maximum of 22 for a cleansing value.

Any thoughts?

I love my 100% coconut bars, but not for every day use on my body.

It is good for mens greasy dirty hands , or gardeners hands, and tough jobs. I use it to clean my sink, bathtub......stove. And my white door facings...it takes off handprints and grandbaby messes great without using anything harsh. I just soap up a rag and go to washing....its great !

I have gave several bars to my family and friends and they have the same results.

I use my other soaps for bathing and everyday hand washing tho..

i often wonder about the soap calc numbers, i made a shea bar, the cleansing number was abouve 22, but was nice? Also, i did a high pk bar that the clean. number was 44! it was so drying, never do that again. I now try and keep my cleansing number below 20.

You can use other hard oils for a harder bar and add I TBSP of sugar PPO to your lye water before you add the lye , for bubbles. Some soapers use 1 TSP of salt PPO to help with getting a harder bar .

You sure can , just mix it well in your lye water before you add the lye .You can use icing sugar , regular sugar or brown sugar etc.

You CAN use that high a cleansing number....but you have to up the superfat accordingly. Basically, cleansing approaches 54, almost three times the normal number.....try about two to three times the normal superfat.....maybe higher. Coconut has a nice long shelf life.

Most of the 100% coconut bars I've seen use a 15%-20% superfat. There is enough free oil in there to compensate for the high cleansing/low conditioning.

I make 100% coconut bars, and they're not a bit drying, even to my sensitive, persnickety skin.

I make 100% Coconut/20% superfat soap. It's lovely and not drying at all.
I believe that any oil will be drying to the skin if the soap is not superfatted at all, of course.
But it's the superfatting that leaves the "free" oils in the soap, that will nourish the skin.
