Hello All,

Newbie just checking. I've been soaping for about 6 months now.

Starting my soapmaking after reading that "old-fasioned" lye soap could be used to control fire ants. Amdro and other ant control has gotten so expensive that I decided to try it. Hardest part was finding a source for the sodium hydroxide.

Sad to say, the soap does not help with fireant control. I ran a series of experiments of different strengths, etc. last summer and nothing...bah. However, my wife and I have come to love the quality of the soaps. Now I've branched out to providing samples to family and friends...and it seems a demand is building.

My favorite recipe so far (although I tend to tweak it each time I make a batch)?

40% Lard
25% Coconut Oil
25% Olive Oil
5% Caster Oil
5% Shea Butter

That's my favorite combo also, although I add a bit of avocado oil as well!

And if I want a vegan bar, I sub palm for lard.

Hello Amanda,

There are several oils that I have not tried yet. Avacado oil being one of those.

I have been making only enough for family use, which means I only make a batch once a month or so, roughly a pound at a time. Next time I order supplies, I'll make sure Avacado oil is on the list.

tyvm!
