Hi. Have been using CA in my soaps for sometime with no issue other than being careful for boil over when adding lye to the CA / H2O mix. Today I read to add the CA to oils instead to avoid potential boil over. I had 7# of my regular oil mix and added the 67gm of CA, then over very low heat began to melt (oils included cocoa butter). The CA will not disolve and looks like a burned mess.
So, adding CA to oils is not a good idea? Or what might be the problem?
Thx.

If you want to add citric acid to your oils, dissolve it in about 2 times its weight of water and blend that liquid into the fats.
If you don't mind my asking, DeeAnna, how much do you add PPO? I do keep a 33% CA solution on hand for my LS. I don't make CP hard bars as often as I used to, and I'd like to try it. My understanding is that it helps reduce soap scum in the tub and shower. :???: ???

I add 10g citric acid to 1 kg mix. Then add an extra 6 g NaOH to compensate as well.

Can I ask what Citric acid does for soap? This is new to me:-?

Citric Acid (or rather sodium citrate which is what you get when citric acid is combined with lye) is a chelator! It reduces soap scum and rancidity, but you absolutely have to remember to add extra lye when you use it or you'll have a super high super fat

Ditto what Dragon Girl said. I mainly use it to lower the pH of LS. It took a while to get it where I wanted it (pH 8.5) but once done, I now know the % I need to add each time I make it.

Oh, Interesting! I had never heard of that but would like less soap scum:)

They are making CP not LS.
Yeah, Shunt, that's what I was asking for... how much 33% CA solution to use in CP.
Sorry I wasn't clear... As it happens, I already use it in LS and, thru trial & error, I learned how much to use in LS. I was hoping to reduce the learning curve a bit for transferring that knowledge to the amount of CA solution needed in CP. KWIM?
