i am starting off by doing test batches and for molds i am using my dh's empty cigar boxes (sshhh!) this is my first batch of CP and i don't know if i should close the lids on the cigar boxes while the soap sets up. should i break them off or close them or what?

i cover my soap which seem to eliminate the ash powder i used to get when i just left them uncovered.

i would try closing the lid. it would seem to add insulation while it gels. i would not let it touch the soap, as it would mar the surface of the soap.

good luck with your soap! :D

cool. thanks for your help. i am so excited to do this and can't wait til i get the hang of everything!

I use a cigar box as a mold all the time! I've done it with freezer paper as a liner...it worked OK. I also used saran wrap as a liner and that worked great. I still needed to shave some of the soap off, cause the saran wrap leaves some "wrinkles" but overall it worked GREAT and I don't plan to change to a new technique anytime soon. Have fun!

what the heck happened?

i have made a few batches of HP now but i just did my first CP and this is what happened: i let lye mix cool down to room temp and did the oils/lye mixing thing per instructions. when i added my scents and grapeseed oil at trace all of a sudden instead of runny soap mix i had thick creamy stuff. i hurried up and put it in my mold, then added the part that i had tried to color dark brown to the top like frosting because that was all i had time for. also, are you suppossed to do a zap test on CP? cuz....yuck!

Krissy, happened to metoday also, some scents make it thicken really fast.

i believed your soap seized due to the f/o-these things happen to all of us at one time or another and are sooo frustrating! that's the reason we are constantly exchanging info on f/o's.

sorry this happened-but it probably wont be the last. most reliable vendors include results in c/p with their product info-if they dont then i dont buy from them. i just cant afford too many hard lessons! also you can email questions about an unfamiliar f/o before purchasing.

i only used 3/8 total of jasmin, sandalwood and a couple drops of chamomille EO for 3.5 cups of soap. i was wondering what seizing meant... i guess now i know. the one good thing was that the color that was just soap came out a really pretty color. almost the color of the foam on a mocha. i just hope the other color i tried to use works out. i used frosting food coloring. it is suppossed to be chocolate brown but has gone through every shade of brown you can think of and looks like poo right now. i cant wait til tomorrow so i can see it out of the mold

a lot of floral f/o's are touchy-jasmine especially. i blend my f/o's with some oil from the batch, add at very thin trace stir just enought to get it mixed in and pour immediately.

soap-on-a-stick and seizing mean the same thing-a PIA!!!

anyway, welcome to the club! we've all been there at least a few times.

DISASTER!

i tried to unmold my soap today and it is stuck. it is ugly too! it smells really good though. i ended up breaking part of the box trying to get the soap out but still didnt gfet the soap out. i finally gave up and threw the whole mess away. i think i will try another HP instead today.

Reading that you use cigarboxes as a mould - brilliant :D I moght have a suggestion: I use wooden wine boxes - most of them come with a lid.
It provides a nice log mold, and as it is a bit thicker thann a cigar box, it lets the soap gel perfectly.
Lining with freezer paper is real easy.
