Saw quite a few outside on the plants this morning.

For those of you who have never experienced a 17 year cicada emergence, if you have long haired fur-babies, watch them, because they will bring them inside in their fur. Trust me on this.

It will be interesting, but according to the Cicada Mania map, they won't be here in my part of Illinois.

The first year we moved here, I was completely unaware of the sounds Cicadas would make. One summer evening I heard this sound like an undulating buzzing that rose and faded and rose again repeatedly. It was so loud and unusual that I had to go outside and try to see where it was coming from while trying to identify what it could possibly be. I ended up phoning my husband, who was not at home but out in the country at that moment to ask him what this weird sound was. He was so amused by my description of what I was hearing, but was able to tell me what they were. After that I noticed them in abundance on the trees in our central park. I had no idea they were so large and ugly. But the sound of them has come to be something I really enjoy. We get annual (or dogday) cicadas every year, so even if the Brood X doesn't come out in our part of Illinois, we'll still get to hear the annuals.
