I bought coconut milk at Walmart and this particular brand didn't have guar gum in it; it does however have citric acid and sodium metabisulfite (as preservative) in it. Will this be alright to use in soap?

The GV shortening I bought because it had palm oil listed as the second ingredient, but the first was beef tallow. There are a lot of other things listed as well such as vegetable mono and diglycerides, bha, propyl gallate and citric acid, dimethylpolysiloxane (an anti foaming agent). I know people use shortening in their soaps; is this shortening okay to use, and for anyone who has used it, what have your results been? Also, what should I put in Soapcalc when trying to calculate this recipe; beef tallow, palm oil, etc.? Thank you!

Christine

Hi Christina,
You should have no problem with the coconut milk; I've used it before and had really nice bars with creamy lather.
The GV Shortening you bought is good too. On SoapCalc, under the list of oils, you will see one listed that says:
-WalMart GV Shortening
That is the one I always use and the bars get hard and add to a nice lather also. HTH

Thank you! I can't wait to try soap made with coconut milk, I've read such great things about it!

I've decided I love the GV shortening in soaps also! I need to order bulk palm oil but I really, really hate ordering things online, I don't know why! Not that I can't, and by the time I get around to doing it I could have had what I wanted two weeks earlier anyway if I'd just ordered when I first thought about it  But I really do love the way the soaps I've made with it have turned out, definitely harder than the ones made with lard. Thanks for the help!

GV shortening

Can this GV shortening be used in place of palm oil? Or am I reading this wrong...

Yes, I used it in place of palm but I ran my recipe through Soapcalc first. The first ingredient listed is beef tallow, so you wouldn't want to use it if your vegan or making vegan products, but.....I'm a meat eater and I LOVE the way this soap feels!
