Hi! I'd recommend reading The Everything Soap Making book by Alicia Grosso. Anne Watson's book, Simple Soapmaking is also a popular read. Do lots of research (there are tons of threads here), and make sure you have a thorough understanding of the process before you begin. Good luck!

i have been reading alot and fully understand a fair bit but never put it into pratice

Hi Bubbles,

David Fisher on About.com has an excellent series on making CP soap. Below is the link to the beginner info. Once you get through it, he has much more on further techniques such as additives, etc.

If you'd prefer to watch videos, I recommend soapqueentv on youtube.

Here's the link to her blog. http://www.soapqueen.com/

eta: I forgot to add that you have to use caustic soda (lye) to make soap. You can't make soap from scratch without lye to create the saponification of the oils.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you. :D

yes it's what's called Lye :) no Lye no soap :)

Caustic Soda=Sodium Hydroxide=Lye. Same stuff, different name.
Just make sure it's 100%.

Hi, I'm a newbie too and live in London, UK. I've made 6 batches so far.

You can buy lye from Robert dyas http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/P~121869~Caustic-Soda-500ml - homecare essentials brand of caustic soda (its 99% caustic soda) - £2.09 for 500ml. They sell two types – “caustic soda” and “drain cleaner with caustic soda” – get the one which only says “caustic soda”. You can also use homebase’s own brand caustic soda – its on the drain cleaner’s shelf but double check its at least 99% sodium hydroxide.

I find rice bran oil, olive oil and lard are easy to find in supermarkets and cheaper than buying online.

For everything else (oxides, ultramarines, hard oils etc) I use www.gracefruit.com and soapkitchenonline. Gracefruit is great for fragrances as they detail how the fragrances will behave in the soap. Soapkitchen also sell lye but gracefruit don't.

It's hard to find freezer paper here so I use Tesco own brand unbleached baking paper as its non-stick on both sides.

Good luck and feel free to message if you need any help.
