I have a bunch of it and no fish at the moment. Of course it will have to be ground up somehow, but I think it's the same stuff. Would grinding with a mortar and pestle get it fine enough? Is it okay for it to be a little "exfoliating" or does it have to be like a mica dust?
Can I use activated charcoal made for fish tanks?

It's fine to use. I can tell you those chunks do NOT dissolve in soap batter! As for exfoliation - that's entirely up to you.
I've used it. A coffee grinder works pretty well.
Yep, but sieve out the bigger pieces. If you use a mortar and pestle, the grinding surfaces may be permanently darkened.

I'm thinking that if any pieces are as big as poppy seeds then they would be scratchy in a bad way. Hope my sieve is fine enough.
