Hi! I recently started soaping in February...started with kits that were already pre measured. I purchased a scale on Amazon in the 23 dollar range, and so far have not had good success with my batches. I haven't developed my own recipes, but take simple recipes that I see on line and
use the soap calc to verify measurements. The scale I use will turn itself off if I step away for a minute...and it switched from oz. to gms. without me touching the button. Of course, it is most likely my fault for failed batches due to my inexperience, but I love soaping and would like to keep at it. I thought if I just got the better scale,at least I could rule that out as the problem. Could some of you tell me what scale you use, or which one would be a good choice for me. Thanks in advance for any info!

I am not an expert with scale brands, but do not get the Ozeri brand scale. Mine is not very accurate and is pretty screwy in terms of cutting off seconds after adding oil (it does so at random). It would be better to pay a little more and go to a store like Target or Walmart to get a scale. At least returning it would be easier.

I've had two different Escali scales, and both work fine. I think it's better to buy one with an adapter upfront rather than rely on batteries, which may give out without warning... Bramble Berry sells a few, which can give you an idea of the price range. $40 should be enough to buy a decent one.

thanks!

thanks for the responses so far....
if you buy the scale with the ac adapter, does that
keep the scale from turning itself off at random?

That sounds like a function that the scale is made to do, almost like how a phone cuts off to save battery power. Hopefully a scale with an adaptor won't have that feature.

I have one I do not recommend: Weighmax 35LBS Digital Postal Scales Shipping Scale, about $20 on Amazon
It locks the weight after a few seconds and you have to wait for it to unlock before you pour any more oil. It has an A/C adapter that I do like, and the size, but the locking is enough to drive me crazy. I use it, but I also have a battery operated one that I got from Target several yrs ago for about the same price, that prefer even though it is small and hard to see the read out if a pot is sitting on it.

I purchased the My Weight KD8000 scale on Amazon and it is really a great scale, it will also shut off unless you either disable that feature or use a power adapter. I found the adapter at Old Will Knot Scales for less than $9 including shipping. The KD7000 is also a nice scale. They are about the same price but the 8000 will weigh heavier items. The only thing I miss is that when I had a smaller scale I would be able to put it in a freezer bag to protect from spills. This scale is too tall for that. For the price it does everything I could want and more.

Ziploc makes a 2 gallon storage bag that measures 13" x 15" and is available on amazon and elsewhere. It should work for spill protection that you had with your previous scale.

Thank you Dennis, I have been known to spill things, I'll check them out!

thank you all for the input! I'll research the above suggestions and hopefully will soon have a new (more dependable) scale.
