I really think I want to do natural color and scents. Any suggestions? I have searched the subject and it does not seem to be working right.

Try your spice rack first....

Turmeric makes a nice sunny yellow
Paprika makes a nice peachy color
Cinnamon colors it a rich brown

that's pretty much where I jump ship and go to oxides, ultramarines, and soap colors, but there's a few to try. I know you can also use alkanet, comfrey, and the like but I'll let someone with experience tell you about those.

I love using alkanet for shades of purple .
Cocoa powder makes a great brown swirl.
Carrots makes a fabulous lasting orange.
Red Clay makes a nice pink.

there is green, red and white clays, i have used chlorella powder for an amazing green color. i have also used food coloring and it has turned out very nice.

acai powder does a pinkish brownish color (i didn't like)
peppermint turns brown as does lavender buds and rose petals

Besides what everybody else mentioned, tomato paste makes a nice orangey color, activated charcoal makes a nice black color, and pink clay makes a good pink color.

Also-I make a soap with fresh avocado puree/freshly juiced cucumbers (peels included)/and fresh goatmilk, and I get a beautiful shade of green.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did an unscented with chocolate swirls tonight and it looks so yummy. I am just having issues with my soap cottage cheesing when I have used fo's. I did not use any fragrance and the soap is perfect. Lessons learned I guess.

Clays make nice natural colors, and some here have had success with yellow dock root making an awesome pink....

I think I might try using clays for coloring since my last batch instantly hardened after adding a FO. I wasn't even able to get it into a mold--I had small individual molds ready and there was no way that soap was going to pour! I just left it in the measuring cup and turned my back on it.

But, as for clay, would you suggest 1 tsp. ppo? And what does that do to the feel of the soap?

Yes, that's a good amount for clays. They give you a nice slip too. Its hard to explain the feel of clay soaps....it's creamy....slippery (good for shaving). You'll like it. Dont get discouraged with the FOs. Some make ya wanna tear your hair out, but if you wanna try one that NEVER gives me any kind of issue, try "Pink Grapefruit" from WSP. It soaps like a dream. It might open ya up to loving them again. :)

Try putting your FO in your pot of oils before you add your lye , I have tried this the last 3 batches I made . It does seem to make a difference.

Thanks Kitn--I'm going to give that a try.

As for the colored clays--where is everyone getting them? Brambleberry and Snowdrift Farms have a very limited choice.

I just want to thank everyone who replied with great suggestions and Kitten (sp) thank you for the tip, I will try this tomorrow. Thanks again.

A few words of warning if you use red clay. A little goes a long way!

I got my clays from Texas Natural Supply, great stuff. Also, I use cooca powder, baker's chocolate, and alfalfa root powder. The alfalfa was supposed to be green but the fo I used turned brown and I haven't tried it since so I don't know.
