So I cut my 2 1/2 day old buttermilk soap just now. Ya know, the one that went wonky on me, curdled, seperated in lye, then SB smooth...all before adding to the oils and fats?
:-?
Well I cut it and there's a slight soured milk scent. I immediately thought of cmzia? Carolyn and the butter soap that did the same for her. Though butter isn't buttermilk, I couldn't help but think of it.
It's a 5% SF with buttermilk as full water amount, 100% Buttermilk. Froze immediately after soaping and left for 24 hrs in there. Removed to dry out another day and a half. No gel. Will it fade? It's so very faint, but there. Curdled like scent underneath sweetgrass  and it's mostly on the bottom of the bars, not the sides and tops. I carefully smelled all sides and it's worse on bottom (and of course it hasn't aired out there yet).

I guess my question is, do you find cows milk smells off a little at first, and it fades? Or is this unusual and I'm stuck with stinky soap? Thx!

Yes, the smell will fade away. I use buttermilk as well as 1/2 & 1/2 and get a bit of a smell when first cut but it's gone when cured. It's the butyric acid in the milks I believe that cause it.

Whew! Never got that with goat's milk soap, and this was my first go at cows milk (for the most part). I was trying a combing technique I made up, turned out ugly, the soap feels drying and technically shouldn't, now the scent. Brother in law with super oily skin and who doesn't care about scent is probably going to get the entire batch!

Glad to know it should fade. Thx you all so much!!

I find that faint odor with goat's milk as well (but I don't use the stuff that's fresh from the goat). It does dissipate with time.
