I wanted to try using some ground lavender flowers, so I made a batch of lavender vanilla soap yesterday using the ground flowers, lavender EO and vanilla oleoresin.

The soap is brown. I don't use any dyes or additives for the sake of coloring, but I'm wondering if the fact that it's brown might be a turnoff.

What do you guys think? Would you look at this and expect it to smell like lavender? (It smells fantastic, BTW.)

Well, I would not mind using it, but some people might (I do have to admit that I like my soaps to be nicely colored if I can though). That said, I am not sure if the lavender powder may have caused some of the discoloration, but the other possibility is the vanilla. As to expecting it to smell like lavender, it has a faint lavender cast to me, so maybe, but I also see a lot of soaps that are uncolored that may have a lavender scent to them.

I actually see a lot of brown soap. You have a market for people that do not like colorants in their soap and a market for those that do. If it smells good and is a nice bar of soap (ingredients wise) I'm all over it whether it is colored or not ;) looks good Park Soap

Brown is a nice, natural, earthy color. I think it goes well with natural, "earthy" smelling lavender. I see lots of brown soaps & I do not think it's a turn off at all.

For me personally, I associate lavender to purple as that's the colour of the flower, I try and match the colour to the scent as much as possible, so to answer your question I wouldn't expect it to smell like lavender but it wouldn't turn me off.

Yeah, vanilla usually discolors to brown, but lavender buds also turn brown in soap so maybe a double whammy on that one. As long as it smells awesome, who cares what color it is? ;-)

Thanks guys!

I'm trying to experiment a little with some new botanicals, to have some variety to sell on etsy (when I'm ready to open my store and start selling). Since I'll be selling online, I didn't want the color to be a turnoff, but as long as the smell is nice, it sounds like it won't be too much of an issue. My soaps will probably be on the more simple, rustic side, anyway. :)

I shall be posting a soap this evening that I made..unfortunately my FO seems to have morphed the color and someone on here once described their soap as poo-with maggots..unfortunately I think this one might fit that description too. :( Yours however looks like a nice even shade of tea-based soap, I would totally buy because I am a lavender addict!

Lavender always turns brown in CP. Add in the vanilla you added and you've got an extra helping of brown. If you'd like a lavender colour without all of that brown leave out the vanilla and add Alkanet Root (natural colourant) into your batter. A little goes a long way with Alkanet!

Your soap still looks great!

I may leave out the vanilla in the future anyway. I don't think it really added any warmth to the overall smell - the lavender is REALLY lavender-y. Or I may try adding ground vanilla, to get some interesting speckles in there. I'm definitely enjoying the process of experimenting!
