Best Basic Videos

I would appreciate recommendations for any really good basic soap-making videos online. Especially with good tips on oil temps. Thanks!

Yes both are great for technique.

I am not a fan on Soaping 101's recipe. I would go with something from Soap Queen or the Susie basic 60% lard, 15% coconut, 20% olive, 5% castor.

I've mixed lye in glass several times. I'm curious why it is a bad idea?

Because it can etch the glass and cause it to break. Not a safe thing to do.

This is an immediate reaction using heated NaOH (not a solution). However, it's the same principle. The problem with using a glass dish or pitcher for mixing your lye solution is you have no idea when it will break and it can be violent and dangerous. What if you have hot lye solution and the pitcher just pops and cracks into several pieces?

Very good to know! So what type of containers do you like for measuring the lye into and making the lye/water mixture in?

Because my size batches vary, I use a gallon Rubbermaid pitcher

I too use a pitcher with #5 in the triangle on the bottom. Or I have a stainless pot I use sometimes too for small batches.
