I suppose this would be the same thing as lard soap right? I have not made soap since 2005, yeah a LOOOOONG time. I have sitting in my kitchen close to a gallon of bacon drippings, umm yeah I am embarresed to say I do. In my defense we have 8 people in our house who all LOVe bacon, LOL! SO heres my question. With all this bacon fat (after I clean it up ) whats the best way to make soap out of it? I have some coconut oil and some olive too if need be to mix it in. I kinda almost want to make it only out of the bacon fat because I heard lard type soaps are great for laundry. What do you soap experts have to say?

I say that you would have to clean it very carefully or it'll stink and go rancid. But I could be wrong.

I love bacon.

The very first soap I ever made was with 100% bacon fat!(over 20 years ago)- but I remember vividly (always remember first time! )

I melted the fat just to warm and liquid- and poured it thru a cheese cloth to get any left over bacon pieces out-

You can use a lye calculator and use just lard to get the lye amount you need for the weight of the fat- probably about a 5% lye discount (superfat)

It makes a nice hard soap because of the salt in the fat- and it was pure white! at that time I did not use any fragrance- just plain soap- not the best lather - but OK-

I would add a little coconut or castor to get a little more lather if you want.

let us know how it turns out!

I dont see why you couldn't make soap with it.

cranberrylk gave good advice. I'd do it like she said. It should be fine if used as if it were lard...not much difference.

Just again, really clean it, the cheesecloth is probably best, or use pantyhose.

good luck, you'll have to let us know how it turns out

Wash it once or twice and it makes perfectly good soap.....it does have a bit of "piggy" smell to it, but it works just fine for household purposes.

That sounds like a great use for bacon fat . Will you let us know how it turns out , please :D

Now I have a really good reason to eat more bacon , I love bacon .yummm

by rendering again, you would render out any smaller bits and pieces that are suspended in the fat. while the salt may be a good thing, you're going to want to try to get the liquid smoke out (or maybe not, i can't speak for anyone else :) )

i agree, please update us on this.

I keep a can on the back of my stove like my great grandmother did. Every time I brown meat or fry something, the refuse fat goes into the can.

When the can is full, I clean the fat and make a batch of soap out of it. I wouldn't want to use it as my exclusive bath soap, but it washes dishes just fine.

a 100% lard soap with some Orange EO also makes a good "stain stick" for laundry pre spotting-
I cut it into long "stick like" pieces and rub it on stains before laundering

oh!! cool! Thank you, I will have to try this!!

Thanks for all the replies. ;0) Well I have been cleaning it by boiling it with an equal amount of water, pouring it through cheesecloth and then putting it in the fridge each night. I asked my grandma who used to make her own soap apparently, and she said I would need to do this a few times, so I am going to go for 3-4 cleanings before I try the soap. I think I might just add a little coconut oil because I don't know if I can stand the piggy smell. I think I'll be ready to soap it on SAturday, so I will let you all know what I come out with. ;0)

This sounds lovely! How much orange EO should I use per pound?

I did a craft show on the 4th of July. This guy walks into my area before the show starts and looks at everything I have made. He asked me twice "Do you make all of this stuff"? I told him that I do and then he looks me in the eye and says "If women really wanted guys to chase them they should wash themselves with bacon scented soap". He did not say another word and walked away. With this thread I thought this would fit.

I use quite a bit.....about an ounce per pound and then use some kaolin to help anchor it.

Lately, I've just been using about 1.5 oz of kerosene in the place of the orange EO. Stinks like crazy but there isn't an oily spot that stands a chance. Kinda like homemade Fels Naptha.

thanks for the tip, cran!

btw, you hit the quote tab in the box you want to quote, then delete the words you don't want to show up in your quote section (being careful not to delete the quote tags)

KEROSENE???? Really? Isn't that carcenogenic to some degree? Dose it really work that well?

 Sorry no offense meant, I just never heard of using Kerosene in soap, it seems like it would be dangerous, but its not?
