Do you guys have backups?

A few months ago a few SMF'ers mentioned having a backup in case something broke. I mentioned having two backup stick blenders (you know you do too). Well one broke today and so now I'm down to one back up.

I have often thought I should have a backup stick blender around, in case I whirr it too long and burn out the motor or it just dies mid-soaping. But I'm too cheap to buy an extra. I do have multiple backup injector tools, though, because I'm sort of a Typhoid Mary of breaking the darn things.

I was just thinking the other day that I need to get me another backup SB

Yep, I have a backup up SB. Picked it up from a thrift store. I don't really like it though, so if I ever do need to use it, I'll be shopping right away for a new one.

I also bought a back up mini-frother last week when I was at a soap supply store in the lower 48. Just couldn't help myself. My original one shipped direct from China, so could take awhile if I need to replace it.

My daddy always told me if you have an indispensable tool for a job you do often, you AKAS(always keep a spare). He was talking about hoes, chainsaws, and axes, but I keep that in mind for stick blenders, crock pots and I am getting better about doing this for oil and other soaping supplies.

I also try to use this for food supplies, if I use it often. I have the open one, and a spare. When the spare becomes the open one, I replace the spare. This keeps me from running out in the middle of a dish.

I have backups for pretty much everything except the SB. If it goes out, well my arms in in pretty good shape, so I could hand stir while I get another SB delivered by SOOTK's rush delivery service. (Send One Of The Kid's) :)

Ok, guess I need to get a back up. Way to guilt me into spending more money. haha

I too have a backup stick blender and frother/mixer thingy. I also have extra plastic measuring cups put away just in case the start cracking or somethign.

... or three

Hand stirring is fun until your 40% olive oil batch takes 30 minutes to fine trace

I have lots of measuring cups, pyrex/kymax labglass and other graduated cylinders. You really can never have too much of them. I also use them for collectors when distilling EOs.

I have a back up stick blender (from the thrift store). I also have a back up scale - got it for less than $10 at Bargain Hunt.

:clap: Bargains are best. In the maybe future am thinking of getting a 70 lb scale so that I can ship, weigh heavy batches all at once, and has a senstivity to weigh EOs. The cheapest I found to do this is $40

I need to visit your thrift stores. The ones in Denver are ridiculously overpriced/shysty. $25 for an ancient, dirty crock-pot when the same brand/size costs $30 new on Amazon.

And don't get me started on donating things. I had an almost new pottery barn entertainment center that simply wouldn't fit when I moved. I had to pay the charity a bunch of money to come pick it up, and they gave me a bunch of attitude to move it 10ft out of the house. I got a call not an hour later from the charity asking me to bring some screws in to them that they had left outside. It already had a sold ticket on it for more than $1000 when they would only give me a receipt for $600 value when they picked it up. <GRUMBLE>

/end rant

I have my regular cooking SB an crockpot that I could use in a pinch. Other than those, I'd have to run out to buy replacements. Since I weigh lye last, I'd be okay if my scale goes out and I need a replacement.

It is plainly a racket. I too have seen things for sale in there that are ther same price as the thing is brand new. I think it may be for write off reasons and to support the overhead. It is so sad. I went to a thrift store around here last year and saw ratty jeans going for $15. Marshalls and Ross are cheaper and newer than Sheistyville. Garage sales and Craigslist are the best for deals too. But you have to be careful on CL; a lot of scams and ripoffs.

I wish I did ! My stick blender died on me (no idea why) right in the middle of soapmaking and it was a recipe that has a higher soft oil percentage as well so I had to handwhisk it till it reached a very light trace after half an hour or more. I gave up and just threw it into a mold.

Perfect timing for this thread...I had my stick blender die on me a couple of days ago...luckily it was only just short of medium trace. Only took about 5 minutes of hand whisking to finish it off, but my planned 2nd batch for the night had to be put on hold. Needless to say, that was enough to prompt me to go to the Warehouse yesterday and buy two at $15 each.

I know i definitely need more bowls, measures, moulds etc...and this has reinforced the sense of urgency in getting them. Time to hit the local garage sales, I think.
