When I first started soaping and went overboard buying supplies before doing any research, I bought 2 boxes of clear plastic bags. One size is like 4X4 and the other bags are like 4X6 I believe. I found out I can't use them to package my soaps because they would leach the scents. That means I can't package my salts etc in them either. Now I have nothing that comes to mind to use them for at the moment. I am wanting to order bags to put my salts, bbombs, and truffles in for packaging. Do I only have cellophane as a choice or is there any other option before I go ordering any more just to sit in a closet? And do yall concur that cellophane won't leach the scents away from the products in case I do go with the cellophane? I bought a whole bunch of ribbon spools at a yard sale that I can tie prettily over the knots in the tops of the bags. I also want to ask if I can use the cellophane bags to do the plastic fishies inside m&P idea?

Are these like ziplock bags? I don't use them but I've never heard of them leeching scent!! Do they have holes in them? What about them leeches scent?

I'm wondering the same thing. I would have thought it unlikely in the extreme that they would absorb enough scent to make any difference at all. Do you mean they would leach the plastic scent into the soap?

One of the other things I make on occasion is scented wax melts and I've found that cellophane works great for packaging or storing them in because unlike regular polypropylene bags, the cellophane bags work much better at helping to contain the scent inside the bag instead of letting it migrate out to mingle with other things stored nearby.

IrishLass :)

I think they're poly. They're really thin like cheap sandwich bags but don't have zips on top. Bought them from a party supply store.

It didn't say it on the box if they were able to be shrink wrapped or not. I haven't tried. The man at the store ordered them for me. All I really know is there were about 1000 in each box for about thirty dollars a box.

I know that brand-name Ziplocs are not good for packaging scented salts. I know because that's what used the first time I made them. Peeee-youuuu. :) Don't know the science, but both FO and EO ended up smelling like plastic.

Right, that makes more sense to me, that the plastic smell leached into the product, not that the plastic leached smell FROM the product.

I've decided to order some rolls of shrink band that you can just cut off as you need it. It looks so much easier on youtube than cutting the shrink wrap off the roll, making bags with the sealer, and then shrinking them onto the soap. Takes forever!

I use shrinkwrap bands. I like the Dan's Bands from MMS but WSP had a sale awhile ago and I ordered 1,000 of their and they work well. I've been using them for 3+ years now. They are easy to use and it really doen't take too long.

I would love a shrinkwrap system but they are a bit to pricey for me. Maybe next years big business expense.

I bought the 16" Impulse and I don't really care for it. I am def ordering some bands. Maybe after using it for a while it will be ok but it is just a big hassle and takes too long and mine didn't come with the cutter like it was supposed to. I got it on ebay and it said Impulse with cutter and they sent me the one without it and it is just a pita. Maybe in another year I will be able to afford one of the wands from National hopefully.

I use shrink bags with an impulse sealer and it takes me seconds to seal and shrink wrap a soap. I have two impulse sealers, 16" & 12" and I love them

I like mine but I have to find out how to get it to seal and cut without leaving ugly edges when it's shrunk. It looks horrible. I pull it out while the arm is still down like on the youtube vids but it ends up not being sealed in places. Wish it had the cutter like it was supposed to. Maybe I'll get the hang of it.

I make 22 bar batches at a time and it takes a while to make and then cut the bags apart. Then place the soaps in and seal the tops to be able to shrink them. They end up with ugly edges that look so terrible.

I'm new to the shrinkwrap game, but I've used an impulse sealer/cutter for other stuff before.

I could be wrong, but if you're sealing poly bags etc, you want to leave a bit above the seal to cut. If you're doing shrink, you need to turn the heat up a little so that it actually breaks at the heated seal and leaves no extra at the seam once you shrink.

Again this is just how I understand it, no experience from practice :)

Not all impulse sealers are cutters too. You want to adjust the temp to where it will just seal then cut off the excess manually. The way you are doing it, I am guessing yours does not have the built in cutter, you are melting down the bag, this will burn up the sealing wire very quickly. The brand sealer I have is set on 2 1/2-3 for sealing thin bags. My bags are 100 gauge
