since this is kinda about dry skin, anyone got an idea what i can do for my DD's scalp? it is DRY. i have tried head and shoulders and t-gel and the H&S worked a little but not totally. she is itchy and miserable and no matter what i do it doesnt get better. she is about to go into the 4th grade after summer and i don't want her going to school and being made fun of because of being "dirty". i have tried both washing more and less often. nothing seems to work and because her hair is almost to her waist, i don't think vaseline is feasible.

Does her scalp have red scaley patches? My dd's was like this. Hers is seborrheic dermatitis. The shampoo irritates it. The best shampoos for her are the kids 2 in 1 or head and shouders sensitive scalp but I also had to take her to the dermatologist. She prescribed something called dermasmooth, which has helped tremendously. My dd has very sensitive skin, which is why I started making soap to begin with, but I just don't know what to do about her hair....she has very long hair too and handmade soap isn't that great for hair with the pH and all.

We seem to be moving a bit off topic here but I am very interested in this Dermasmooth stuff as my DD has this same condition and long hair! I will look into this for her...thanks!

Back to the ash on skin thing...Phillysoaps, do you add a bit of silk protein to your soaps? You can use the liquid or cheaper, the undyed Tussah silk fibers. I use 1/2 tsp of liquid silk to my water, then add the lye. If you use fibers I believe that you add it to the lye water and let it dissolve into the mixture. The reason I mention this is because it gives a nice "slip" feeling to the soap...not the squeaky clean drying thing....but the soap seems to rinse off very well without much effort. I am olive skinned and I always used to get that ashy thing on my arms and legs when I used commercial soap. I switched to shower gels for awhile and I think it helped alot. Then, I started making my own soap and adding the silk. I never get the ash now and I do have older and very dry skin, plus I live in a dry climate. I can't be sure but I think it is the silk that keeps the residue off my skin. I have hard well water, too. Is your water especially hard with minerals? Well, you might want to try the silk in some soap for yourself and see if it helps.

Forgot to say: I use 1/2 tsp of liquid silk per pound of oils.

I've read about the use of silk fibers, thanks for the advice. In about a month or two I may try it.

i bought 3 and a half yards of silk from a wholesaler. it was super cheap as they are going out of business. i love it!!

Glad to be of some help! We went through a lot of different prescriptions before the dermasmooth and none of them were of any help. I know my dd was miserable before the dermasmooth, but now it is under control and she feels so much better!

I BELIEVE WE ALL SUFFER FROM THE SAME DRY-SKIN-SYNDROME, BUT IMHO IT IS MORE APPERNTANT TO DARK SKIN BEAUTIES THAN TO THOSE WITH LIGHT SKIN.

THE OLDER I GET, THE DRIER MY SKIN IS. I TAKE SKIN SUPPLEMANTS, BUT UNTIL I STARTED MAKING MY OWN OLIVE OIL LOTION, I HAD ALLIGATOR SKIN.

I MAKE A VERY SIMPLE OLIVE OIL LOTION. I LOVE IT, AND YOU CAN MAKE IT CHEAPER THAN BUYING THE "UPSCALE #$%&!"! THAT YOU ARE USING NOW.

A SIMPLE LOTION WOULD BE 10% OLIVE, 10% EMULSIFYING WAX AND 80% ALOE/WATER.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK AT WWW.LOTIONCRAFTER.COM

THERE ARE MANY SITES THAT ARE DEVOTED TO THIS SUBJECT

I actually find it very drying, but my neighbor with that lovely oily teen skin swears it's the only thing that keeps her spots under control.

I just got in another shipment and am now liquifying it (I like it much better this way as I can filter out any grit and I can add glycerine for a more caring soap) to make a face wash. I also sell it in chunks as is, as well as "rebatched" with shea butter for a richer soap.

It is an interesting material, and one I frankly find time consuming - but folks who love it absolutely NEED it.
