Argggghhh!! Waiting for the Lye

Looking at all of your pretty soaps and reading all the comments is getting me excited about making some soap!

My oils came on Friday but I ordered the lye from a different company. I hope it gets here soon!

Why did they have to make the lye so hard to get?

You can thank the drug makers for not being able to buy lye at your local grocery store. Before the meth makers started lye was in lots of stores.

Yes I bought it at the grocery store last time! How long has it been unavailable?
Doesn't the government know that they can make their own lye if they wanted to?? Sheesh!

I'm lucky that the Menards right by my house carries 100% lye in 1 lb containers. I just pick one up once in awhile and hope they don't quit stocking it. I only make small batches so it's the perfect quantity for me.

I have bought lye at Atwoods (it was expensive) if you have one near you. You have to ask for it and show ID ...... thanks to the meth makers.

Freezer paper would be like butcher's paper, what they wrap meat in when you buy it. Or is it just a US thing?

What I know as 'butchers paper' is just really thin brown paper, like what they have in kindergartens for kids to paint on ?

It's not waxed or anything though so I don't see how the soap wouldn't stick .. We do have 'waxed paper' in the supermarket, could that be it ?

That's what I know as butchers paper too. Almost like packaging paper but thinner. I bought wax paper yesterday to line the shelves where my soap will be curing.

Butcher paper: plain paper

Freezer paper: paper that has been coated with a very thin layer of plastic on one side.

Wax paper: paper that has been coated with a very thin layer of wax. Kind of safe for baking, but the wax does melt (ask me how I know).

Parchment paper: paper that has been made with the addition of silicone. Safe for baking.

Its only coated on one side too! Kinda scary that they use lye for cleaning!! ~Wow!~

I wanted to see if I could find a page online that showed what freezer paper was....... it is coated on one side with polyethylene is what this site says.

If you use it a lot maybe this would be the way to get it ..... 1100 ft for $44 for the 15 inch wide.
