Hi! I've long been interested in making soap, but somehow never quite got around to it. Recently I was reading about enfleurage, and decided that it sounded perfect for making really interestingly scented soaps from scratch (without the addition of pre-made/store-bought essential oils). I'm buying my first batch of suet today, and so I decided it was a good time to join a forum (impersonal websites can only help so much XD)

I'm looking forward to chatting with people about different methods (especially as I already know I eventually want to move into vegan-friendly soaps, even though it sounds like a much more complicated process).

Welcome!
Vegan soaps are no more complicated than making soaps with tallow.

Oh! That's very good to know - I was expecting vegan soaps to take a bit more tweaking to get a nice balance of features, but after playing around with SoapCalc, I think I can see how both non-vegan and vegan soaps can be complicated or simple.

welcome.. im a newbie too.
is suet = tallow?

Suet = unrendered fat (with bits of meat and gristle in it). The best is from around the kidneys of an animal (as it has the least meat/gristle, and is almost all fat). You turn suet into tallow by boiling it with a lot of water and salt, and then refrigerating it. I'm in love with it, because I can get suet for free from our local butcher :D

Hi, I'm also new in here and from Sydney. I made soap about 15yrs ago and at the time we had a butcher shop so I used the fat from around the lambs kidneys, couldn't stand the smell on the stove.

Hi

I'm a Kiwi living in South Aussie and new to CP soap making ... but with a love of home made soaps.

It's great to see there are other Aussie's on this forum!
