I've been making bath bombs and massage bars for ages, and when I finally got into soap, it was m&p, which I started about 3 months ago. But there was a little voice in my head that kept saying "cp, cp!" I finally listened and made my first batch today. I don't have pictures yet, but here's the recipe

coconut oil 25%
olive oil 25%
palm oil 25%
sunflower oil 20%
castor oil 5%

Soapcalc tells me my soap quality is

Hardness 38
Cleansing 17
Condition 58
Bubbly lath. 22
Creamy lath. 26
INS 145

The only thing is, it never seemed to reach a really thick trace. There was a light trace, and I kept mixing with my stick blender, but it never seemed to get any thicker. In the end, I got fed up and poured it into the mold.

So tomorrow, we'll see.

But I did it. My big fear was the sodium hydroxide, and I did it! Yay! And I couldn't have done it without all the information I've got from months of reading this forum. So, thanks!

Congrats on your first batch !!! I too just did my first batch of CP yesterday. Had the same fear of the Lye !!!! I cant wait to see your pics!!!!

Congrats Peaches!! You have just taken your first step down the slippery slope of soap making. It's all down hill from here... :p

soap

good for you! congrats! just a thought- i always keep a bottle of vinegar handy just in case i flick some lye on me. it instantly neutralizes the lye and stops it from burning.

happy soaping!

Yayy, peaches!!! I know just what you mean - my biggest fear was the lye and now 4 weeks on from my first batch I am so brave

Congratulations, and your recipe sounds nice. What fragrance did you use, if any? Can't wait to see pics

Oh, thanks everyone! I used a cinnamon orange fragrance because I thought it was Christmassy. It smelled fantastic. I normally use essential oils for scents, but they cost a fortune and I thought I'd have to use tons to get a nice scent. Well, I have a lot of fragrance left!

I'll post pictures later today.

Excellent advice, heartsong!! I keep a spray bottle with a 3:1 water/vinegar solution by my work space. I have had to use it a few times, too. I flicked raw soap on my cheek (yes, I always wear safety glasses) before and my bottle was right there. Then I use it to neutralize my area during clean up.
