Hi! I have an odd question to ask - has anyone ever made an aniseed or liquorice fragranced soap (not necessarily both) , and if so - are they good scents to use or are they a bit... weird?

I'm asking because it is mother's day soon and I want to make a soap for my mum. She likes aniseed and liquorice a lot - I for one HATE both, but I can cope with the smell if it means I can make a nice soap bar for her, haha.

So yeah, anyone think it will work? Or is it not a scent that really goes well with soap? Thought I'd better ask the experts!
Haven't actually decided what else I want to put in the soap yet... but I would like it quite nice and sensitive, not too drying or anything like that. I'm still new at this so any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks x

I scented a soap with anise about a month ago. Actually, it's anise, juniper and ginger, but the anise is strongest. I really like that scent in soap - I've bought anise-scented bars in the past. My SIL was delighted when I gave her one of my bars - she'd tried the bought one I had when she was visiting a few years back, and had loved the scent

So I would say that yes, it smells great in soap, if you like the licorice smell.

I think Anise is used a lot for hunters & fisherman (they say fish like it?). I haven't tried it myself.

I just bought BB's sampler pack of EO's, and Anise is one of the scents in the pack.

I have made anise soap and it smells just like black licorice. I call it hunters/fishermen soap. They use it because it covers up the human scent . It smells wonderful.....

Yep, i've used the anise EO in both melt and pour and cold pressed, coloured both soaps purple, both came out beautiful.
The melt and pour had the stronger scent (a friend of mine is using it on his hunting trips) and the CP has a nice gentle smell too it, not over powering.

Ah cool, thanks for all the tips everyone. :) I really want to try this out, the problem is there is not enough time for it to cure before Mother's day. I might have to resort to buying some - I went into Lush today and asked and the woman showed me some quite nice soaps.
I'd really love to make my mum one though... perhaps I can try out M&P as that doesn't need curing time, does it?

I think that Mother's Day in the UK is earlier, right? Maybe you could try HP? I've been thinking about trying my luck at it.

Yeah, it's earlier here. It's in 11 days. :0
I don't know much about HP... but doesn't that also involve use of lye and thus curing time? Correct me if I am wrong...

do a hp process in the crockpot, it is so easy! Only a week to cure.
I also am buying some licorice smelling fragrance in my next bacth, my daughter loves it.

yes. lye, but hp cooks off the lye, ready to use in one week, some would say 2?

Maybe a wee bit off topic here, but why would hunters want Licorice? Wouldn't that make them smell yummy to the predators?
Candied Humans Anyone????

It is actually ok to use the same day. All they lye should be cooked out. But it is better to let it harden for at least a week.

Okay, I think I will try the hot process method to make this soap!
I've only ever done CP (and I've only done that twice) so I would appreciate some help with this. I looked up some methods and it seems that I have to do as I would with CP (melt oils, mix with lye solution, wait for trace) but THEN put the pot of soap mixture into the oven to cook for about 15-20 minutes, then mix in my fragrances and pour into my moulds. Is this correct?

Oooh that does sound quite cool...I never realised Absinthe was aniseed flavoured... I always wanted to try it but I guess I'll have to avoid it now, seeing as I hate aniseed, haha.
I found a star anise EO in a UK online shop which I think I might buy, anyway!
It's annoying, there's loads of shops which sell EOs near me, but they are all mixtures of fragrances and the only individual ones are not the ones I want. So I'll have to go for the internet, I guess.
I'll try out this hot process business, although I'm still not sure what to do. I always thought a crock pot was a big ceramic pan which you put in the oven but apparently not... I don't think I have one. :(
