Hi again everyone. Took the weekend off from researching and reading and formulating since I was starting to dream bubbles...LOL Also went to a Scentsy party for a friend and then had company on Saturday. Sunday I worked in my front wildflower/perremial garden and kicked back with a few Mikes Hard lemonades.

Anyway, back on track. Searched high and low for lye this weekend while I was out....no luck anywhere. So I will be ordering that this week at some point for my first batch which is going to be a Salt bar. That means it's going to be a new adventure for me since that is something I never made before.

But here is where the funny topic comes in....with trying to prep everything and get all my ducks in a row I wanted to work on mold sizes so that in the coming weeks I could build molds on the weekends with a friend of mine.

The first thing I did was figure out the dimensions of my finished bar 3.5 x2.5x1.5. Then I figured out how many bars I wanted per batch, 16. Then I figured how big of a mold I needed to build and how many ounces would fill that mold. So the final figure was I needed a 5.25 pound batch of soap to fill a mold that will be 6x10x3.5 (84 oz.). I will also keep a pvc pipe around for any excess if I miscalculated.

Now I just have to work on my test bar mold/s and thinking of a way to build a log mold with dividers that can be removed for salt bars.

So my question is am I the only one who has gone about working backwards...starting with mold building and then working up to how many ounces you need to fill that mold, then working on the formulations or does everyone do it that way?

I haven't acctually built the molds yet but I've drafted plans for a small loaf mold that will make 6 bars that are 3.5 X 2.5 X 1" and a small slab mold that would make the same dimension bars. I pretty much used the same method you did. I have the wood and tools ready to go, just need to do it.

So now I know I am not weird or anything. For me it was easier to work backwards starting with how many bars I want to make per batch. Then figure the size of the mold to be built. Then on to the amount of soap needed to fill it.

me too. bar size then mold size then quantity of soap to fill
