Alternative to using vodka for clear soap.

Yes, Iam being lazy by not looking it up but everyone here is so knowledgable I figured you'd be able to help. My next adventure is to make transparent (fingers crossed) soap. The recipe calls for 10 oz of 180 proof vodka. This is cost prohibitive as far as I'm concerned, so is there a decent, reasonably priced alchohol alternative to vodka?

Everclear?? I know you can get it in NC but I don't know about other states because it's 190 proof.. .. I have an aunt that lives in PA and buys everclear and strong vodka for transparent soap making when she comes to visit. And you can get the cheapest Vodka out there it doesn't have to be Stolichnaya.

When I made transparent soap, I had to get denatured alcohol* from a chemical supply house...can't remember who but it would have been someone in Vancouver area....FPI maybe? You can't get 190 proof at the liquor stores here in Canada.

I also had to get a license to buy the denatured alcohol.

*Has additives put in it so it cannot be consumed orally.

For all practical purposes, denatured alcohol is ethanol with a bit of methanol added to make it poisonous. Should be no problem, as long as you let your soap air out thoroughly and keep it away from pilot lights and flames.

I think we need to up the ante nowadays... lets build an underground bunker on the back 40 (re: the bat cave!! I always wanted one of those!!! lol... ) and instead of a studebaker (which are beautiful).... or the batmobile...yeah i know what you were thinking...i think we need to opt for a rocket propelled McLaren with autopilot!!! yeeeeeeeeees
