How would you make a all natural sugar scrub without all the bad stuff?
And how long would it cure ?

That's what I was thinking. What is "bad" to one soapers is not necessarily bad to most everyone else.(Then again, I embrace red 40, and SLSa which many bath and body people see as evil so shrug.)

brown sugar scrub, the one i make is:
brown sugar, almond oil, vit e, as long as you dont get water in it, it lasts for a long time. you can use oo, but i really like the feel of almond.

If you want to make one without all of the bad bacteria and fungi and such, you'll need to use a proper preservative.

I am not sure if this answers your question because you asked about curing time. My sugar scrub is sort of a paste. I didn't need to cure it.

I found my recipe for a Sugar Scrub online. I do not have the link at the moment. It had an odd name i.e., Sugar Scrub because it also called for salt.

The ingredients are: While Sugar, Brown Sugar (I used raw cane sugar), Epsom Salt, Sea Salt, Olive Oil, Vegetable Glycerine, Vitamin E, and an E.O., F.O. or your choice.

I presume the Vitamin E helps preserve it.

I'm sorry if this doesn't answer your question.

Regards

sorry, but you presume wrong. :(
vitamin E can help protect against oxidation/rancidity but won't do squat as a preservative against mold and bacteria both of which LOVE sugar in a nice, wet environment.

let any water from the shower get into that jar of scrub whether it be from dripping in off your fingers, spray in the shower, or condensation from the lovely steam in there - and you have a breeding ground for nasties which may or may not be visable to the nekkid eye.

Appreciated.

Thank you for the explanation. It helps me greatly. So far I only make it for personal use, but I have to ensure it's out of waters way.

Regards,

April

I don't know what is meant by "bad stuff" either. But I like this recipe from WSP...

I made a variation of it for xmas. I subbed Germaben II for the phenonip to have a paraben free preservative. And instead of using a pan I formed mine in fun shaped latex ice cube molds.

There is really no cure time but I do refrigerate them for a few hours to firm up and then put them on my curing rack until I am ready to package them. But they are more or less ready to use immediately.

thanks Mickey - I was thinking of tossing some together. you liked the hardness?

I do... they are kind of like a very sugary peanut butter fudge consistency. You can easily adjust that, and you have plenty of time to work with them before they cool too much. You can always zap them a bit to warm them up if necessary. One batch I wasn't totally happy with so I just smushed them all back together and added a little more sugar and they were much better.

Story:

My sweet husband gifted me with a Spa treatment. After the treatment, the therapist presented me with an option to buy a scrub (combination Himilayan Crystal Salt and Sugar). It was $40+ although it was a fairly large jar (not solid). I declined because we were overseas and our suitcases were already overflowing. But I was thinking, "I can make that at home and it won't cost me $40+". End of story.

I did make it at home using the recipe I described earlier in this post. I swaped a few ingredients and included the himilayan crystal salt. It was for personal use.

These scrubs, whatever form they take, are amazing. My skin felt like a babies bottom after I used mine. I know you are going to love it.

Have a fabulous day.
