Hi all,

Would adding lanolin to the oils before the lye affect the properties of the lanolin? I heard it is best to add at around 100 F because it is temperature sensitive, but just wanted to know since I never worked with it before and others have way more experience under their belt.

I am hot processing the soap.

Thanks,

Kyle

That's how I would do it. I've not added lanolin to my soaps but if I did I would add them to the oils. However, there is no guarantee what properties remain from our additive after saponification. But we can certainly hope a lot of goodness is still there.

was gonna say the same thing. if it is temp sensitive, wont it be ruined during the cooking process, as it can get quite hot?

Lanolin's melting point is about 100F, so it's not crazy heat-sensitive.

I have found multiple body butter and lotion bar recipes that contain beeswax (melts around 150) and lanolin, so it has to be able to take a least that much heat. So I would add it after cooking, maybe giving it a few minutes to cool down, but wouldn't bother waiting until close to 100 unless you're using a low flash point fragrance that has to wait anyway.

Thanks everyone! I am going unscented. It's for a shave soap. I think i may try and add after the cook. Will melt by double boiler first though.

bumping this thread..

so i am going to try adding some lanolin to cp soap. the lanolin i have is anhydrous one i believe. in soapcalc there is a sap for lanolin, but it says liquid wax? is it the same thing?

since it has a sap value, it should be added to the calc, correct? since lanolin is said to be heat sensitive, should i prevent gel? i get kinda confused about the term heat sensitive sometimes.
