I found a sugar scrub recipe that I'd like to try, but it has palm kernel oil. It is the only ingredient in the recipe I don't have, and because I just placed some pretty big supplies orders, I'd prefer not to buy any. I've never seen or used Pko before, so does anyone have a good idea of what I could sub?

The recipe says to melt small amounts of pko, stearic acid, and e-wax, then mix in larger amounts of sweet almond oil and sugar.

Any ideas? Thanks!

scrubs are pretty forgiving, but coconut has a MUCH lower melting point than pko and is liquid at 76 degrees whereas pko will be (very) solid. While they provide similar results when saponified I don't find them much alike when still as oils. palm is a better choice perhaps.

do you have any other solid oils or butters?

I have palm, shea, cocoa, and mango butters. I used the coconut and it seems okay... maybe the stearic acid in the recipe saved me? What would be a better choice next time? I feel coconut oil, even unsaponified, can be drying, so any other suggestions are appreciated for the next time around. Thanks, carebear!

the coconut may be just fine - as I said, scrubs are pretty forgiving.

I made an assumption that you are trying to duplicate (as in make it come out the same) something made with PKO. I'd have subbed for it with a combination of cocoa butter and either coconut oil or mango butter perhaps.
