Here's a little summary of what I learned over the past year:

These were my first soaps. I read everything and tinkered around with soapcalc for months before I made these. In the beginning I got kind of obsessed with getting an INS of exactly of 160 - which I now know is not necessary, but it does work! I was thrilled with my first attempts but after these I got a hankering for some scents and colors.

My next experiments - On the right from the bottom to top: alkanet infused soap with BB cranberry fig FO, rose clay soap with MMS rose FO, and paprika infused soap with MMS chai latte FO.

On the left from bottom to top: green oxide shampoo bar with rosemary and mint EO (my first oxide and I didn't use enough); cocoa butter soap with cocoa and BB deep rich chocolate FO (the 5% cocoa butter is fantastic in the shower - this is one of my favorites); and a yellow oxide shampoo bar with lemongrass EO. I don't care for the lemongrass but my family loves it!

That lemongrass batch was my first experiment with CPOP - and I was immediately a convert. This batch was much harder, more consistent, and easier to unmold than the others. I started CPOP'ing like crazy after that.

From bottom to top:
-Failed in the pot swirl with burgundy oxide (it was supposed to be two colors but I mixed them too much!) and MMS fruit slices FO.
-Salt bar with BB spiced mahogany FO - the brown color was a surprise - I paid attention to vanilla discoloration after that!
-A recent salt bar rebatch with just a bit of blue oxide. This was the same recipe I used the first time, but with 70% instead of 50% salt. It came out dry and crumbly, so following forum instructions I mixed it into a second batch, which saved the day!

Then the swirling bug bit me and I changed my recipe to tone down the solid oils and give myself more time before trace. I bought the amazing acrylic slap mold from soapmakingresource.com and did a bunch of linear swirls. They are in chronological order from right to left, and you can see that I got better over time!

Cosmetically speaking, this is my favorite soap so far - it's a center pour swirl with blue oxide, green mica, and copper mica. It's still curing so I haven't tried it yet; hopefully it will be a nice soap to use!

Then I bought a silicon loaf mold and a cheese cutter, and starting playing with loaf designs. From right to left:
-an attempt at the soap queen "sunshine soap" with yellow oxide and calendula petals (I didn't use her recipe, but it's definitely her design).
-a three color in the pot swirl with MMS relaxation FO
-a two color in the pot swirl with lots of gold mica and MMS sensual FO.

And that's more or less where I am now. It's been very fun and I'm looking forward to many more batches. Thanks for looking and thanks for all the great knowledge on the forum!

Nice soaps! I love that with soaping you can try something new and learn something different with each batch.

You've come a long way, baby!

All soaps are beautiful but I'm really impressed with the swirled ones. (I'm lousy at swirling.) Normally, I'm a big color fan but the black and white one is very elegant looking.

That's so true - I have 40 pages of notes from all these experiments (including the lotions and balms I tried along the way as well).

I'm not exactly where I want to be in swirling technique but I intend to practice a lot more.

The black and white soap is actually a gardening soap - the white is pumice and titanium dioxide. The TD clumped though; if the photo was bigger you'd see the white bits. Lesson learned there about dispersing TD...

It looks like you and I started at about the same time (I'm almost a year in from my first time) and have gone thru just about the same experiments/stages in our learning! A couple of things that I've done different is my first batch was hp and I got my loaf mold right from the start. It's been fun and very challenging. I love your swirled soaps! I'm still trying to perfect my swirling.

Alright - a soaping partner! I want to try HP - a crock pot is on my (long) wish list.

Yeah, a partner! I wasn't happy about the look of my hp soap but it got me to try cp so can't complain. The only time I've used my crockpot since then for soaping was a rebatch. I've seen some beautiful hp soaps but I'm a ways from trying it again. Have too many other things on my long list. I want to try liquid soap but I'm having too much fun with cp.
I love how your sunshine soap came out! Calendula soap was my favorite and it went fast with my friends/family so I've got to make some again. What are you gonna make next?

Your soap making progression is awesome, you have made some mighty gorgeous soaps.
